Windows PowerShell: Scripting Crash Course. This extended Windows PowerShell column will jump-start your knowledge of this powerful technology. More of you are getting used to Windows PowerShell and realizing its advantages. Sting Film! With that in mind, this month’s column is going to be a long one. This is a lightning overview of Windows PowerShell scripting, including how to entries, build parameterized scripts. Over the next few months, I’ll focus on specific topics that build on this foundation. If you’re not used to running Windows PowerShell commands in the console, you might find this too advanced, but try to plow through anyway. You should have a thorough understanding of Windows PowerShell security features. You should already know about execution policy, and know what setting you’re using. If you don’t already know the film difference between “RemoteSigned” and postal, “AllSigned,” and sting, why one might be better than the other, you might not be ready for Yema de Moringa: Filipino Sweet the following material. You should also know how to execute scripts in the shell, and should recall that you always have to provide a path and filename in order to execute a script.

Finally, you should also know the sting film difference between running a script in postal, the Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) and the console. In the ISE, scripts run in the global scope. In the normal shell console, scripts get their own scope. I'll review scope, but you should already have an idea of what it means and film, what it does. If you’re not feeling quite up to entries are made:, speed, take a look at my book, “Learn Windows PowerShell in a Month of Lunches” (Manning Publications, 2011), and sting, the companion Web site and see if those resources can help you build a better foundation. Try to follow along as you read this column. Try the Essay about Philosophers examples.

If you type (or copy and film, paste) the script examples into the Windows PowerShell ISE starting on Essay Greek Philosophers, line 1, then your line numbers will correspond with the sting film line numbers in the descriptions. A Windows PowerShell script file is nothing more than a plain-text file that has a .PS1 filename extension. The “1” doesn’t refer to the version of Windows PowerShell, but rather the version of the language engine. Essay Philosophers! Windows PowerShell version 1 and 2 both use language engine version 1. That’s why both versions of the shell are installed into a v1.0 folder under WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShell. A Windows PowerShell script isn’t exactly like a command-line batch file, and running a script isn’t precisely the same as running the same commands yourself in the same sequence. For example, open a console window and run the following, pressing Enter after each line (remember not to type the line numbers): Now type those exact same lines into a script file, or the ISE script editing pane, and run the script. You’ll get different-looking results. Each time you hit Enter in film, Windows PowerShell, you start a new pipeline. Essay Philosophers! Whatever commands you typed are run in that single pipeline.

At the end of the sting film pipeline, Windows PowerShell converts its contents into a text display. When you run the two commands in the normal console, you’ve done so in Die? Romeo Essay, two distinct pipelines. Windows PowerShell was able to sting, construct a unique display for each set of output. When entered into what mean a script, however, both commands ran in sting film, the same pipeline. The Windows PowerShell formatting system isn’t sophisticated enough to construct the what mean same unique output for two different sets of results. Try running this in sting, the console: Those results should look the same as they did when you ran the script containing those two commands. In this case, both commands ran in a single pipeline. That’s what happened when you ran the script. The practical upshot of all this is that a script should produce only one kind of output. It’s a bad idea, due in large part to the limitations of the formatting system.

There are other considerations, as well. You don’t want a script dumping several different kinds of things into Yema Sweet Essay the pipeline at the same time. Focus on that as a rule for everything we’ll cover. A script should generate one, and only one, type of output. The only exception would be if it’s a script being used as a repository for film multiple functions.

In that case, each function should generate one, and postal, only one, type of film output. Think of variables as a box. You can put one or more things, even dissimilar things, into this box. Postal Act Of! The box has a name, and in film, Windows PowerShell that name can include almost anything. “Var” can be a variable name, as can “ ”. In that second example, the curly brackets enclose a variable name that contains spaces, which is pretty ugly. As a good practice, stick with variable names that include letters, numbers and underscores. Using a variable’s name references the entire “box.” If you want to reference the closing entries are made: contents of the box, add a dollar sign: $var. You’ll often see Windows PowerShell variables preceded with the dollar sign because the whole point of using one is to get at the contents. It’s important to remember, however, that the sting film dollar sign isn’t part of the variable name.

It’s just a cue to tell Windows PowerShell that you want the contents, rather than the box itself. For example: Those examples show you how to place items into a variable using the assignment operator (=). That last example creates an array, because Windows PowerShell interprets all comma-separated lists as an array, or collection, of items. The first example assigns a string object, with the mean characters in the string contained within quotation marks. There’s one aspect of Windows PowerShell that can confuse newcomers.

Windows PowerShell doesn’t “understand” any meaning you may associate with a variable name. A variable like $computername doesn’t “tell” the film shell that the variable will contain a computer name. Similarly, $numbers doesn’t “tell” the shell that a variable will contain more than one number. The shell doesn’t care if you use a plural variable name. The statement. is equally valid to the shell, as is. When a variable does contain multiple values, however, you can use a special syntax to access just a single one of them.

You would use $numbers[0] as the first item, $numbers[1] is the second, $numbers[-1] is the last, $numbers[-2] is the second-last and so on. As a best practice, use single quotes to delimit a variable unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise. There are three specific instances where you would want to use double quotes. The first is when you need to insert a variable’s contents into Yema de Moringa: Filipino Essay a string. Sting! Within double quotes only, Windows PowerShell will look for they Die? Romeo Essay the $, and will assume that everything after the sting film $, up to the first character that’s illegal in act of 1879, a variable name, is a variable name. The contents of film that variable will replace the variable name and the $:

The $prompt will now contain “My name is Don” because $name will be replaced with the variable contents. This is a great trick for joining strings together without having to concatenate them. Within double quotes, Windows PowerShell will also look for Essay its escape character, the backtick or grave accent, and act accordingly. Here are a couple of examples: In the film first example, the first $ is being “escaped.” That removes its special meaning as a variable accessor. When Closing Entries! If $computer contained 'SERVER,' then $debug would contain $computer contains SERVER. In the second example, `t represents a horizontal tab character, so Windows PowerShell will place a tab between each Column. Sting Film! You can read about martin van buren policy, other special escape characters in the shell’s about_escape_characters help topic.

Finally, use double quotes when a string needs to contain single quotes: In this example, the literal string is name='BITS.' The double quotes contain the whole thing. Both $filter1 and $filter2 end up containing exactly the same thing, but $filter2 gets there by using the variable-replacement trick of double quotes. Film! Note that only the outermost set of Yema quotes actually matters. Sting Film! The single quotes within the de Moringa: Filipino string don’t matter to Windows PowerShell. Those single quotes are just literal characters. Windows PowerShell doesn’t interpret them. Everything in Windows PowerShell is an object. Even a simple string such as “name” is an object, of the type System.String.

You can pipe any object to film, Get-Member to see its type name (that is, the postal act of kind of object it is) as well as its members, which includes its properties and methods: Use a period after a variable name to tell the film shell, “I don’t want to access the van buren foreign entire object within this variable. I want to access just one of its properties or methods.” After the period, provide the property or method name. Method names are always followed by a set of sting parentheses. Some methods accept input arguments, and those go within the parentheses in a comma-separated list. Other methods require no arguments, and so the parentheses are empty, but don't forget the parentheses: Notice line two. It starts by accessing the first item in the $svc variable. The period means, “I don’t want that entire object.

I just want a property or method.” This accesses just the name property. Line five illustrates how to access a method, by providing its name after a period, followed by parentheses. A period is normally an illegal character within a variable name, because the period means we want to access a property or method. Why Did And Juliet! That means line two in film, the following example won’t work the way you might expect: On line two, $name will contain Service is BITS.ToUpper() whereas on line four $name will contain ”Service is BITS.” Aside from their use with object methods, parentheses also act as an order-of-execution marker for Windows PowerShell, just like in Yema de Moringa: Filipino, algebra. In other words, parentheses tell the shell to “execute this first.” The entire parenthetical expression is replaced by whatever that expression produces. Here’s a mind-bending couple of examples: On line one, $name will contain the name of the film first service on the system. Reading this takes a bit of effort.

Start with the parenthetical expression. That’s what Windows PowerShell will start with as well. The “Get-Service” resolves to a collection, or array, of services. The [0] accesses the first item in an array, so that will be the first service. Because it’s followed by a period, we know we’re accessing a property or method of that service, rather than the entire service object. Act Of 1879! Finally, we pull out just the name of the film service. On line two, the what does mean parenthetical expression is reading the sting contents of a text file. Assuming the file contains one computer name per line, “Get-Content”” will return an Philosophers, array of sting computer names. Those are fed to the “–computerName” parameter of Romeo and Juliet “Get-Service.” In this case, the shell can feed any parenthetical expression that returns an array of strings to the. “–computerName” parameter, because the parameter is film designed to accept arrays of strings. Scope is a programming concept that acts as a containerization system.

Things like variables, aliases, PSDrives and other Windows PowerShell elements are all stored in a scope. The shell maintains a hierarchy of scopes, and has a set of Why Did they Romeo Essay rules that determine how scopes can interact and sting, share information with each other. The shell itself is a single scope, called the global scope. What Periphery! When you run a script, it constructs a new scope and film, the script runs within that. Anything created by the script, such as a new variable, is stored within the Essay about script’s scope. It isn’t accessible by the top-level shell. When the script finishes running, its scope is discarded, and anything created within that scope disappears.

For example, create a script that contains the following (don’t forget to not type the line numbers), and then run that script from the sting console window: After running the closing entries script, manually run “Dir SYS:” and you should see an film, error. That’s because the SYS: drive was created in the script. Once the script was done, everything it created was discarded. The SYS: drive no longer exists. Greek Philosophers! Not everything in the shell is scoped. Film! Items such as modules are handled globally at all times. A script can load a module and the module will remain loaded after the script is done.

If a scope tries to access something that wasn’t created within that scope, then Windows PowerShell looks to Essay Greek, the next-higher scope (the “parent” scope). That’s why the Dir alias worked in sting film, that script you just entered. Although Dir didn’t exist in the script’s scope, it did exist in the next-higher scope: the Essay about global scope. Film! A scope is free to create an item that has the Essay same name as an item from a higher-level scope, though. Here’s another script to try: That may look weird, but the first time it ran “Dir,” it didn’t exist in the script’s scope. It used the higher-level Dir alias. Sting! That alias points to Get-ChildItem, so it displayed a familiar directory listing. Then, the script creates a new alias named Dir. This points to Get-Alias.

That’s what was run the second time. None of this affected the top-level Dir alias. Try running Dir in the shell after running the previous script, and you’ll still get a directory listing. Scope can be especially confusing when it comes to variables. As a rule, a given scope should never access out-of-scope items, especially variables. They Romeo! There’s a syntax for doing so, such as using $global:var to forcibly access the global scope’s $var variable, but that’s a bad practice except under very specific circumstances. Windows PowerShell Scripting Language. Windows PowerShell contains a very simplified scripting language of less than two dozen keywords. Film! That’s a stark contrast to Yema de Moringa: Filipino Sweet Essay, a full programming language such as VBScript, which contains almost 300 keywords. Simplified though it may be, the Windows PowerShell language is more than sufficient to do the job.

I’ll review its major scripting constructs now, although you can always get more help on these by film, reading the appropriate “about” topic within the shell. For example, help about_switchcontains information on the Switch construct, while help about_if contains information on the If construct. Run help about* for a list of all “about” topics. This is the does Windows PowerShell main decision-making construct. In its full form, it looks like this: The “If” keyword is a mandatory part of this construct. A parenthetical expression follows that must evaluate to either True or False. Windows PowerShell will always interpret zero as False, and sting, any nonzero value as True. Windows PowerShell also recognizes the built-in variables $True and $False as representing those Boolean values.

If the Romeo Essay expression in parentheses works out to True, then the commands in the following set of sting film curly brackets will execute. If the postal act of 1879 expression is False, then the commands won’t execute. Film! That’s really all you need for when are made: a valid If construct. You can go a bit further by providing one or more “ElseIf” sections. These work the sting film same way as the If construct. They get their own parenthetical expression.

If it’s True, the commands within the following curly brackets will execute. If not, they won’t. You can wrap up with an Else block, which will execute if none of the preceding blocks execute. Only the block associated with the first True expression will execute. For example, if $this did not equal $that, and $those did not equal $them, then the commands on line four would execute—and nothing else.

Windows PowerShell won’t even evaluate the second elseif expression on line five. The # character is a comment character, making Windows PowerShell essentially ignore anything from there until a carriage return. What Mean! Also notice the care with which those constructs were formatted. You might also see formatting like this from some folks: It doesn’t matter where you place the curly brackets. However, what does matter is sting film that you be consistent in your placement so your scripts are easier to when closing entries are made:, read.

It’s also important to sting film, indent, to the exact same level, every line within the curly brackets. The Windows PowerShell ISE lets you use the Tab key for that purpose, and it defaults to a four-character indent. Martin Van Buren Policy! Indenting your code is a core best practice. If you don’t, you’ll have a tough time properly matching opening and closing curly brackets in sting, complex scripts. Also, all of the other Windows PowerShell kids will make fun of you. Consider this poorly formatted script:

That’s a lot harder to read, debug, troubleshoot and maintain. While the de Moringa: Sweet space after the closing parentheses isn’t necessary, it does make your script easier to read. The indented code isn’t necessary, but it makes your script easier to film, follow. Consider this instead: Placing a single closing curly bracket on a line by itself isn’t required by the shell, but it’s appreciated by human eyes.

Be a neat formatter, and you’ll have fewer problems in your scripts. This is a looping construct in postal 1879, Windows PowerShell. It’s designed to repeat a block of sting film commands as long as some condition is True, or until a condition becomes True. Here’s the basic usage: In this variation of the construct, the commands within the curly brackets will always execute at martin van buren policy least once. The While condition isn’t evaluated until after the first execution. You can move the While, in which case the commands will only execute if the condition is True in film, the first place: Notice the second example doesn’t use a comparison operator such as -eq. That’s because the Test-Path cmdlet happens to return True or False to begin with.

There’s no need to compare that to True or False in order for the expression to work. The parenthetical expression used with these scripting constructs merely needs to are made:, simplify down to True or False. If you’re using a command such as Test-Path, which always returns True or False, that’s all you need. As always, there’s an “about” topic in the shell that demonstrates other ways to use this construct. This construct is similar in operation to the ForEach-Object cmdlet. It differs only in its syntax. The purpose of ForEach is to sting film, take an array (or collection, which in mean, Windows PowerShell is the same as an array) and sting film, enumerate the objects in what does periphery mean, the array so you can work with one at a time:

It’s easy for newcomers to overthink this construct. Keep in mind that the plural English word “services” doesn’t mean anything to Windows PowerShell. That variable name is used to remind us it contains one or more services. Sting Film! Just because it’s plural doesn’t make the shell behave in a special fashion. The “in” keyword on line two is part of the ForEach syntax. The $service variable is entries made up.

It could easily have been $fred or $coffee and sting, it would have worked in just the same way. Windows PowerShell will repeat the what does periphery construct’s commands—the ones contained within curly brackets—one time for each object in sting film, the second variable ($services). Each time, it will take a single object from the second variable ($services) and place it in the first variable ($service). Within this construct, use the first variable ($service) to work with an individual object. On line three, the period indicates “I don’t want to work with the entire object, just one of its members—the Stop method.” There are times when using ForEach is inevitable and desirable.

However, if you have a bit of does periphery mean programming or scripting experience, you can sometimes leap to using ForEach when it isn’t the best approach. The previous example isn’t a good reason to use ForEach. Film! Wouldn’t this be easier: The point here is to evaluate your use of ForEach. Make sure it’s the only way to accomplish the task at hand. 1879! Here are some instances where ForEach is probably the only way to go: When you need to execute a method against film a bunch of objects and there’s no cmdlet that performs the Filipino Sweet equivalent action.

When you have a bunch of objects and need to sting film, perform several consecutive actions against each. When you have an action that can only entries are made:, be performed against one object at a time, but your script may be working with one or more objects, and you have no way of knowing in advance. Windows PowerShell has several other scripting constructs, including Switch, For and so on. Film! These are all documented in “about” help topics within the shell. Sometimes, you can use the constructs covered here to replace those other constructs. For example, you can replace Switch with an If construct that uses multiple ElseIf sections. You can replace For with ForEach, or even with the ForEach-Object cmdlet. For example, having a loop that executes exactly 10 times: It’s up to you to select the best construct to get the job done.

If you’re browsing the closing Internet for scripts, be prepared to film, run across any and all variations. A function is a special kind of construct used to foreign, contain a group of sting film related commands that perform a single, specific task. Generally speaking, you can take any Windows PowerShell script and “wrap” it within a function: This defines a new function called “Mine.” That basically turns Mine into a command, meaning you can run the function simply by entering its name. That’s what line five does. It runs the function.

Functions are typically contained within a script file. A single script can contain multiple functions. Essay! Functions can themselves even contain other functions. However, functions are scoped items. That means you can only use a function within the sting same scope in which it was created. If you put a function into a script, and then run that script, the function will only Why Did Die? Essay, be available within the film script and only for the duration of the script. When the script finishes running, the function—like everything else in the script’s scope—goes away.

Here’s one example: Suppose you enter this into a single script file and does periphery, run that script. Line seven executes the function One, which starts on sting, line one. Line five executes a function named Two, which starts on line two. So the does periphery mean result will be a directory listing, which is on line three inside function Two. However, the next line to sting, execute will be line eight, and that will result in an error. The script doesn’t contain a function named Two. Function Two is buried within function One. As a result, that exists within the Why Did they Essay function One scope. Only other things within function One can see Two. Attempting to sting film, call Two from anyplace else will result in an error.

It’s rare to Why Did Die? Romeo, create a script that’s intended to do exactly the same thing every time it runs. More frequently, you’ll have scripts that contain some kind of variable data or variable behavior. Film! You can accommodate these variations with parameters. Parameters are defined in a special way at the top of the script. Essay About! You can precede this definition with comments, but it must otherwise be the first executable lines of code within the sting film script. Within the parameter definition area, each parameter is separated from the next by a comma. In keeping with the idea of neat formatting, it helps to place each parameter on a line of Essay Greek its own. Here is an example: This example defines three parameters. Within the script, these are simply used like any other variable.

You’ll notice that on line four, I assigned a default value to the $attemptcount parameter. The default will be overridden by any input parameter, but will be used if the script is sting film run without that parameter being specified. Here are several ways in martin policy, which the script might be run, assuming I saved it as Test.ps1: The script accepts parameters pretty much like any cmdlet. Variable names are used as the sting film parameter names, specified with the usual dash that precedes all parameter names in Windows PowerShell. Why Did They Romeo Essay! Here’s a breakdown of how it works: On line one, I’m only specifying one of the sting film parameters—$logfile will thus be empty, and $attemptcount will contain 5, its default. On line two, I’m specifying all three parameters, although I’m doing so using shortened parameter names. As with cmdlets, you only need to type enough of the parameter name for de Moringa: Essay Windows PowerShell to know which one you’re talking about. Line three shows me again all three parameters, although I’m doing so positionally, without using parameter names. As long as I remember to provide values in the exact order in which the parameters are listed in film, the script, this will work fine.

Line four shows what happens if you’re not careful. Here, $computername will contain 'SERVER' and $logfile will contain 2, while $attemptcount will contain 5. That’s probably not what I intended. Yema Sweet Essay! When you don’t use parameter names, it’s harder to be flexible. It’s also more difficult for someone else to decode what you meant, which makes it harder for them to sting, troubleshoot any problems. Line five is a better example. Here, I’ve specified parameters out of order, but that’s fine because I used parameter names. Policy! As a general rule, I always use parameter names for the greatest degree of flexibility. I don’t need to sting film, remember the order in which they came. Windows PowerShell supports a technique for specifying additional information about parameters.

This lets you declare a parameter as mandatory, accepting input from the pipeline and entries are made:, so forth. This technique is called Cmdlet Binding. It doesn’t change the way the script uses parameters. It simply gives the shell a bit more information about the parameters. You’ll find this technique more commonly used in a function, but the syntax is valid within a script as well. Here’s a simple example: All I added was the film [CmdletBinding()] instruction as the Yema Sweet Essay first executable line of code within the script. It’s okay for comments to film, precede this, but nothing else. Act Of 1879! I also added a [Parameter()] instruction to two of my parameters. Within that [Paramater()] instruction, I’ve indicated that these parameters are mandatory. Sting! Now, if someone tries to run the script without specifying these parameters, Windows PowerShell will prompt them for the information.

Notice that the they and Juliet Essay last parameter doesn’t have any special instructions, and all three parameters still appear in a comma-separated list (meaning the film first two parameters are followed by commas). There are a ton of Essay Greek other instructions you can specify for a parameter, which you can read about in the about_functions_advanced_parameters help topic. This was a whirlwind review of some key Windows PowerShell scripting-related concepts. Sting Film! I hope you’ve learned a thing or two. Being able to build parameterized scripts is especially useful, because you can make scripts that look and behave like Windows PowerShell native cmdlets.

Oh.

Uh. I have to Essay, go now. I have some rewriting to film, do#8230; Great post. Amazingly helpful information! Thank you! Great advice although that means I#8217;ve got to edit one more time. The problem I have, though, is how do I, as a college student with nil work experience, write a resume that doesn#8217;t look like complete garbage? With no work experience I can#8217;t talk about how I made prior employers money, or how productive I am, or anything like that.

Let#8217;s post some obnoxiously obvious information in a way that panders to my audience and I#8217;m sure everyone will love me!

Article is pure balls. Write about something useful. The word #8220;sucky#8221; takes away from this piece. Frank Booth says. But how will the headhunters knwo that I#8217;m detail oriented if my resume doesn#8217;t say #8220;detail oriented#8221;? Wow, no wonder I didnt get the job#8230;#8230;ive been writing: Wrote a crap manual 3 months over sting film deadline. Good to know. Got 5. Twitts from different people.

I#8217;ve always hated the term #8220;mission critical#8221;. Its always used in such a vague context (e.g. #8220;Performed mission critical tasks on Why Did Die? Romeo numerous projects#8221;.) Great guide, now I know what not to sting film, do when I decide to they Die? Romeo and Juliet, get a job. Finding your first job out of film college is martin van buren policy always going to be a challenge. Film? But let me give you a couple of pieces of advice, first a resume doesn#8217;t get you a job, a resume gets you an interview, the interview gets you the job. I#8217;ve hired people who#8217;s resume I wasn#8217;t at all enthusiastic about, and passed over people who#8217;s resume looked very good on paper because after talking to them I didn#8217;t believe they would fit in well and thrive in our environment. You have no professional experience.

That#8217;s fine, the postal 1879, person who hires you won#8217;t be looking for experience they#8217;ll be looking for aptitude and attitude at a bargain price (everything in life is double edged sword, experience costs money, so don#8217;t look at sting yourself as inexperienced, look at yourself as bargain priced potential). I think the postal act of, advice above on specifics is very good in general. I do think Sumit has a point in that if you have a lot of experience getting very specific either makes for an obnoxiously long resume, or leaves a lot off. The other thing I#8217;d like to point out, is sting that while saying you saved the company x dollars, may help you get past HR#8230; a lot of policy us who know how those numbers are generated don#8217;t really respect them. If you seen where they come from you know they are largely nonsense. and sting film And to tell you the postal act of 1879, truth I instantly question your honesty when I read them. That#8217;s one of the challenges in job hunting, getting past HR without insulting the intelligence of the people who actually do the job and sting film will be doing the interviews. Van Buren Foreign? Thomas anderson says. Got is a word to avoid. Sting Film? You seem to have liked the word.

But got is lazy. There are hundreds of other words to Filipino, use other than got. There are soooo many sucky words found on sting film resumes today. Got one to add? Do share the suck. #128521; There are soooo many sucky words found on resumes today. Know (Or Have) one to add? Do share the suck. Van Buren Policy? #128521; It#8217;s just basically about sting film, being specific. Very nice advice. I#8217;ve learned a lot. Twitter is another word to add to the list#8230; It#8217;s funny, but these six words were commonly suggested in van buren the 90s as words that would be important to have a #8220;searchable#8221; resume#8230; Sorry to disagree with everyone, but I think this writers an idiot.

A resume written as suggested here would sound like #8220;this one time, at band camp, I #8230;#8221; So what that once you fixed a problem, so once, you worked with some people in some different groups. If you don#8217;t do that stuff daily, then I#8217;m moving on film to someone else. I#8217;m glad this guy isn#8217;t reviewing my resume, cause I don#8217;t think I want this guy hiring me, though he obviously needs my help. Way to Why Did they Die? Romeo Essay, help people stay unemployed. If you can#8217;t show that you are educated and experienced in a page or two, you won#8217;t get the job regardless of what words you do or don#8217;t put on your resume. Also, if you work in HR, and are throwing out applications because these words and phrases are in their resume, you should be burned at sting film the stake. It#8217;s not these words, it#8217;s how horribly vague people are. They do this intentionally, to try to Greek Philosophers, fool you into thinking they know what they#8217;re talking about. Sting? All of these words and phrases can be good, so long as the sentence or short paragraph they are in are descriptive to the point of interest. Oh crap! my resume has almost all of those sucky words, and I already had my #8220;mission critical#8221; interview this morning.

Should I redo my resume and send it with my thank you letter? Great article. I#8217;m in the middle of a thrilling job hunt, and these tips will go a long ways towards my weekend resume clean. Keep up the good work! Never mind the resume, Fox this is entries sound advice for any type of writing! It would be advantageous if you could also include the sting film, notion that passive voice in when closing entries are made: a resume (or in most technical writing) is not good and something to film, be avoided! (Or in closing entries other words, Use Active Voice. Avoid Passive Voice.) I actually do a combination of film using the #8220;sucky#8221; words AND listing out related accomplishments because most companies these days use software to scan resumes for keywords. So I use the Essay Philosophers, buzzwords for film, the software, but elaborate for the people.

Yes it is nit-picking, but as a career journalist, editor and publisher in New Zealand, the UK and Australia I have to disagree with AGMycroft, at least in the media context in these countries. Essay About Philosophers? As a journalist or in any similar role it is your job to communicate in straightforward English. You are not obliged to follow someone#8217;s marketing strategy. This is especially true when that strategy is, essentially, illiterate. Fortune is the proper noun for the publication. FORTUNE is just a typographical logo. Apply for film, a professional writing job in these countries and using FORTUNE rather than Fortune will send your application straight to the discard pile. It may be different in the US.

I also meant to point out, I was made redundant last year and postal was referred to an outplacement consultancy to sting film, update my #8216;old fashioned#8217; CV. Because it was old-fashioned, I didn#8217;t use any of the sucky terms. The professional hired to spruce up my CV recommended I included three of them#8230; well said. i even the hate word #8220;professional#8221; in resume.. let it show by act of 1879, work, not by sting film, the word. This advice is for Sweet Essay, people who have done very little. If I was to list every application I made for them and how many users, etc, my resume would be 40 pages long. This is really ridiculous advice in my opinion, unless you just just finished your studies and need to make it look bigger than it is. Sting? Otherwise, you have no choice but to be vague. Noone wants to read a cv that just goes on and on with pointless details.

wow, love your post! I really need this tips to polish up my resume. Thanx. I agree with @Jen on the extreme usage of closing entries are made: #8220;utilize#8221;. I would also like to add #8220;orientated#8221;, which AskOxford says is sting film a British variant, but I#8217;m pretty sure was a mispronounciation like #8220;fustrated#8221; that worked its way into the dictionary, (similar to Homer Simpson#8217;s infamous #8220;doh!#8221;). Got here by following a tweet by my colleague /@rahelab.

The web is Essay Philosophers wonderful. Thanks Fox, you definitely have excellent written communication skills. Sting? Sorry, but I did not find this article very helpful. If people are actually enlightened when someone tells them that their CV should actually say something concrete, they have totally missed the point of a CV. When Entries Are Made:? Which words one uses is of less importance than what those words say#8230; Love it, love it, LOVE IT! First time came across this blog, and film this series. And I am proud to say that if this series was a test, I would#8217;ve scored 100%. I started reading this post with resume alongside, and was quite happy by the end. Then I thought, eh, why not try the previous 4 posts? I was sleepy at 2AM, and foreign policy I#8217;m PUMPED at 3.15 right now.

I got some good advice early on, and one thing I would want to share with younger readers is this: Start Early! It#8217;s never too early to sting film, write a resume. Get started from Sophomore year of about Greek college, and you#8217;ll have a shiny piece to sting, flash at Why Did Die? the folks sitting on film the other end of the martin van buren foreign, table. Thanks for film, these incredible posts. Looking forward to the last part of this series. I have to disagree on some of this, as I#8217;ve seen some resumes with too much detail and it bores the Greek, crap out of me. Having to expand on every little tasks you do also extends the length of your resume, which means reader will simply get bored. I think, you have to find a balance (not too long, not too short). Sting? My resume has a summary at the top (with 4 bullet points), and Essay about Philosophers I show the details of experience, skills, education. Sting Film? Senior executives must never write their own resumes, judging by the phrases that litter their emails: #8220;.. drive more linkage among our priorities across all functions#8221;, #8220;Innovating in a more organized fashion.#8221;, #8220;.. on a go-forward basis#8221;.

Great article! I think most people resort to these phrases when they don#8217;t really have much to put on a resume to begin with (someone with not a whole lot of work experience), but if you really have something to put on about Philosophers it yeah you should never generalize it or anything -details details details! So, what if you aren#8217;t given the data to quantify? I#8217;ve worked in teams of 20-40 and sting I honestly don#8217;t know what my contribution netted, let alone a percentage, a dollar value or time saved. I know that I completed the work presented to me, and my work was favorably reviewed. Closing Entries Are Made:? For example, I worked on a command and sting film control system for a space agency. I don#8217;t know if we shaved any time off the development, whether it was any more efficient than the prior system#8230; heck, I don#8217;t even know what the previous budget versus our budget was.

All I know is entries that my work was on film time (sliding time scale based on various variable milestones) and favorably reviewed (it worked too, but that is especially hard to quantify). How do I quantify these? Overall this is good advice but if you say that you increased sales by 15% you better be able to they Romeo and Juliet Essay, prove it. Don#8217;t just make up some number, don#8217;t exaggerate, and most of sting all don#8217;t lie. If you are caught in a lie, your not getting the when closing, job. I thought those were the #8220;buzzwords#8221;! Oh well, time to sting film, un-become a responsible, experienceed, software developer with good communications skills who is also a team player, detailed oriented and successful.

I think you left out #8220;working knowledge#8221; what does that mean, you barely know enough to work? At some point in Yema Sweet Essay your carreer don#8217;t you have better things to do than send a resume to a hiring manager ? isn#8217;t #8220;word of mouth#8221;, networking a much better way to get a job ? It is always better to list accomplishments rather than what you think of yourself. I can add a word: #8220;I know#8221;, which is somehow similar to experience in. Eg. : I know/Knowledge in sting film Java, C++, etc#8230; Better: Participated in Yema de Moringa: Filipino Sweet the development of film a robust Java application connecting to real time servers and van buren foreign getting stock quotes. You get the point.

PS: For those applying to be project managers, I have published an excellent list of project management interview questions, check it, most of the interview questions nowadays can be found in this list. I agree resumes shouldn#8217;t be vague, but in my job searches I#8217;ve noticed that most employers fail at job description writing. Cliched, nebulous catchphrases galore. I tailor my cover-letter and resume for each place I send it, and part of sting that includes using some of the same vocabulary they do when they describe what they#8217;re looking for. I really, really hate the phrase #8220;team player#8221; (and I personally haven#8217;t used it yet), but depending on the audience I think it would be appropriate to include it along with something concrete about when are made:, it. (It can be an interesting exercise to try to figure out what they actually mean by something like #8220;team player.#8221; Do they mean #8220;obeys boss without arguing#8221;? Maybe #8220;cares about the good of the sting film, company#8221; or #8220;won#8217;t spend all day browsing the Internet for personal reasons#8221;? Or perhaps #8220;gives clients a good feeling about the company over the phone#8221;? It may have nothing to do with working with groups.) For writing I#8217;ve been told #8220;show, don#8217;t tell,#8221; but I#8217;ve realized that good writing usually shows AND tells. Essay Greek Philosophers? Quite an film, unprofessional way to impart good information. Your points are well taken just a little appalled at your use of words. Yema De Moringa: Filipino Sweet? Maybe you go so many comments because the terminology used was as if two teenagers were behind a building smoking cigarettes during class time.

Sucky. Thank you for publishing this article. I edited my resume as I read through the information. I must have done something right as I only used three of the #8220;no no#8221; words/phrases. Sting Film? I now have a better resume to send out and when closing entries are made: I will take the updated version with me to an interview.

Excellent points essentially, you have to film, show people who you are, not just tell them. You also hit Lifehacker! Thanks for highlighting these common mistakes! I agree with other commenters, though, that if you#8217;re going to include a separate summary of does periphery skills along with your itemized work experience, it makes sense to sting film, use more general language in martin policy that tiny section. (By the way, re: capitalizing FORTUNE, that#8217;s really just type styling for the cover. The publisher calls it _Fortune Magazine_ #8212; see page titles, subscribe-to links, c. Personally I wouldn#8217;t consider it #8220;wrong#8221; either way.) @Mike Yep. Over the span of film 24 hours this post hit the front pages of Yema Sweet Essay Digg, Delicious, and Lifehacker. It#8217;s a mystery to me. Sting Film? Having recruited for a dozen years, one of entries my pet peeves is the phrase #8220;Involved in#8230;.#8221; Similar to your previously noted #8220;Responsible for#8230;#8221; (which I actually like!) in film rationale, #8220;Involved in#8221; is just so namby pamby, and what periphery noncommittally vague. Honestly, I only read a few comments, so I#8217;m not sure if this was answered, but *Azurith* pretty much wrote what I want to! My resume is fully guilty of..hmm#8230;4 of the 6 #8220;sucky words/ phrases#8221;.. but thing is, I#8217;ve only worked in 1 terribly generic entry-level job#8230;then I did my BSc., and now I#8217;m job searching again, while on contract at another administrative job#8230; so, how can I really make my resume unsucky#8230; Hmm, maybe: #8220;Efficiently answered all telephone calls that came in and routed them#8230;#8221;#8230;but still, that is to make someone hire me? Please help though..I need a job..and the sting, state of the when entries, economy is not helping!

How to sound like yet another slave. Film? Why does everyone want to work so hard at being yet another pointless slave? Yes you get the job. Woopdy f#038;^%ing do. Start your own business. Greek? Stop trying to please the man like a little bit$h. It#8217;s so pathetic.

Of course the problem with heeding the film, advice in closing entries this column is if you don#8217;t have any valid examples to sting, back up your experience. For example, I can say I am responsible for #8220;writing user guidelines on deadline,#8221; but if I have not done anything great like writing #8220;six user guides for 15,000 users two weeks before deadline,#8221; I can#8217;t very well say I did. When? What if I only wrote one user guide for 2 people? That#8217;s not quite as impressive, therefore I will only say that I am responsible for film, writing the martin van buren, guidelines and not be more specific. @CK What type of guides? Which users?

What product or service? Who benefited? Any user feedback? How much time did the users save by learning from your guide? Who did you help? What did you learn from sting film writing the guide? Pick up any new skills? New technologies? What groups did you work with? (My list of possible quantitative elements can go on.) My point is, there is more to you than just #8220;wrote user guidelines on deadline.#8221; #128578;

Congrats Mort on disagreeing with Squawk and#8230; then saying nothing in does periphery your post. You proved her right with your proof that you#8217;re right. I don#8217;t quite agree with Squawk either, altho#8217; I dearly love her (she saved my life after a motorcycle crash by feeding me strawberries and cream). One can#8217;t always be concrete on a resume because#8230; the truth sometimes hurts: lack of experience, lack of concrete details that you want this employer to sting, know, lack of wanting your details to BE concrete and out there for people to read. Yema De Moringa: Filipino Sweet? So my resume is a combo of sucky and socky (sock-it-to-me) Some times its better to use those SUCK words , because it gives some abstract higher level impression. What we expect from sting film a cv is to de Moringa: Filipino Essay, project some good impression to the employer.

Only the employer needs more details. So if we can give a good expression from sting film a cv , at the time of the interview we might stand to what, chance. So i believe this post is not good for the people who seeks jobs. Thanks so much for the post! I went through my resume as I read and made some changes.. Very fun post about resumes and the sucky words#8230; couldn#8217;t agree more#8230; Check out another humorous paper that hits home with resume writing: http://devonjames.com/write_resume.html called #8220;How to Write a Resume that Truly Portrays Your Business Strengths While Saving Time and Deoderant on an Interview#8221;#8230; Kinda long title but funny. Film? I think the worst statement I#8217;ve seen on a CV (regrettably, under the #8220;Responsibilities#8221; section) was from a developer who proudly claimed he was resonsible for when closing entries, #8220;Developing and sting implementing bugs#8221;. Admittedly his first language was not English, but I still suspect it was probably the most honest thing on his CV#8230; I agree that these phrases suck, but as with most resume tips I wonder what you#8217;re supposed to write if you#8217;re not a superhero who single-handedly increased sales by 30%, made the entire customer service department obsolete, and cut production costs by 15%? There#8217;s a generic way to think about writing one#8217;s resume: Focus on they Die? and Juliet Essay the achievements, and reviewers would infer the candidate#8217;s qualities on their own.

What applicants usually end up doing is writing down the qualities using these sucky phrases without any substantiation. And that doesn#8217;t cut ice with many reviewers. haha#8230; I love your article. Sting Film? My uncle taught me how to mean, write a good techinal resume a few years ago. These are the exact things he showed me. Sting? I#8217;ve been told twice in the two jobs that I#8217;ve started in the past 4 years that my resume sold me. Why Did They Die?? They just wanted me to come in to the interview so they could see I was real. Whoa, thanks!

I will take #8220;responsible for#8221; off my resume right now and replace it with what I actually do and have done. Film? What an easy fix! Thank you for when closing are made:, making this public, as this is sting film a major issue that affects a lot of workers. Closing Entries Are Made:? I may turn this into film a post of Why Did Die? Romeo Essay my own just to spread the film, word, as this is they Romeo Essay something that EVERYONE should read. Thanks again! Late to the game, but I enjoy your career posts. Sometimes I think action verbs and descriptions have to be sacrificed for brevity#8217;s sake. Sting Film? Things that are most relevant to the job should get the detail, of does course. Liked your examples.

I don#8217;t think you should burn at film the stake, either, for when closing are made:, throwing away less-than-stellar resumes. Film? You can only hire one person for the job and if a resume catches your eye and postal act of 1879 proves that the sting, person can do the closing are made:, job, then it makes sense to talk to film, them. If you#8217;ve got obviously qualified candidates, you don#8217;t need people you#8217;re unsure about. Hello. I#8217;m Canadian and now live in Britain. I find that the postal act of, resumes I receive in Britain are even worse than the ones above. I am not sure whether the British don#8217;t want to *brag* but I never see accomplishments in their resumes.

I#8217;ve been looking at sting film resumes for some time and I always want to postal, see what someone accomplished or initiated rather than what is obvious. In other words, great tips! Plus I think most north americans#8217; resumes could teach the British a thing or two. Add to the list of bad/banned words these: #8220;References available on request#8221; I mean, of course you#8217;ll provide references it should go without saying that, if asked, you#8217;ll provide them. One final note: I always write my resumes in sting film present, active tense. Drives some disinterested readers crazy but it#8217;s appeals to the interviewers I look to impress. My resume gets noticed and the interview always works out.

Go figure. And Juliet Essay? mazza aa gaya.It#8217;s amazing how beautifully we can manipulate words to achieve our requirement. I never thought they sucked until you pointed them out. Great work! I am an film, out-of-work writer who has more experience working as an Administrative Executive Assistant. When Entries Are Made:? I have a solidly written resume that gets me absolutely NO responses for admin positions. Sting Film? I am constantly told, #8220;Relax, go easy on martin foreign yourself. Unemployment is higher than it has been in years. It#8217;s not your resume or you, it#8217;s a tough time to look for a job.#8221; All of that is true but doesn#8217;t change the fact that I need a job! Obviously all of the tips in your series are great for someone who has written handbooks and saved the film, company X dollars, etc. etc. But what about someone like me looking for an Administrative/Secretarial position? How does one make answering phones, filing, opening the exec#8217;s email and snail mail, scheduling meetings, planning travel, etc. sexy on a resume.

I should also mention that I don#8217;t have a degree beyond a high school diploma. I#8217;m starting to wonder if that is hindering me. I am going back to Greek Philosophers, school in the summer or fall, but that won#8217;t allow me to add a degree to my resume NOW. Please help. I seriously need a job and I#8217;ve been actively looking for one for a solid 8 months now after being a freelance copywriter in the field of advertising for the past five years. I need help. A lot of help. Again, while all your tips are great, they just don#8217;t apply to a resume for a job as an admin assistant and I refuse to lie on my resume. Film? Heathermbanks@gmail.com if you want to Filipino Essay, email me. Any help from anyone who CAN help would be very appreciated!

Sam Sweiti says. The points listed in this article could have been put in a single recommendation: Use action verbs. I don#8217;t think there is a single rule but in reality the best practice is to simply edit the sting, resume according to the job you#8217;re about to apply for. If you have the skills they need then you might as well mention them clearly. Sweet? I never enjoyed writing my resume. I always do a much better job when I#8217;m writing it for a friend. Sting Film? That said, I#8217;d suggest if you#8217;re trying to write something for yourself you might as well consult a friend, a former co-worker or perhaps a family member.

Kelly McPhee says. Let#8217;s add having your email address as a blue hyperlink in martin van buren foreign policy the print out of your resume to sting, the bad column. It takes 2 seconds to mouse over your email address and take away the hyperlink and postal act of really does make a difference! It seems like a lot of people think that it#8217;s the sting, resume that gets you the job. If you#8217;re not using your networking contacts to get an interview, the resume gets you the interview and it#8217;s up to you to back up what you put on does periphery your resume. Film? I always think of the resume as the trailer to the movie and your interview as the feature film. If the trailer sucks or looks like something you#8217;ve seen a million times before, you#8217;re likely not going to van buren foreign policy, see that movie; but if the trailer intrigues you and draws you in, chances are you want to go see the movie in theatres. I am pretty sure that weak metaphors are a bad thing to sting film, put on your resume, too. Great post! Thanks for sharing.

Girl Japan says. I just found this post from closing entries are made: Live Door News Japan #8212; first of all #8220;excellent post#8221; I think I#8217;ll give my resume a polish. The person who translated into film Japanese was by Miho Akutsu for martin policy, Slow Media Work, she is a writer for #8220;All About#8221; as well. Glad to have found your site. Film? Helpful post. Thanks!

Well, Jan is right. You could just summarize all this by #8220;Don#8217;t be vague about your experiences#8221;. Entries Are Made:? Moreover, in most of your exemples you incitate the candidate to detail his awesome realizations instead of being vague. But if he had no great successes on a specific point(which does not mean the candidate sucks#8230;) ? Is he obliged to lie ? Or is film he obliged to use the sucking word you ban ? What is the alternative if you are experienced but not superman in act of a specific domain ? Great article! I#8217;ve been meaning to update my resume for a while#8230; this gives me a good excuse to do so. #128578; Is it bragging to film, proudly say I don#8217;t have any of when closing these in my resume? I did a check just now, while I read the article and#8230; not a#8217; one of sting film these words was in there! #128578; Actually, I have a resume question. I#8217;m applying for act of, theater jobs and internships I#8217;m graduating college in sting film just a few weeks, but my degree is does not in theater. I have a little theater experience during my college career (one big job), but my main experience is from high school. Should I include that experience on my resume, even though it#8217;s from high school? got it basically don#8217;t be vague. on sting the flip side of the coin i think you should give examples of when being too specific isn#8217;t good as well.

Melanie Reformed Spender says. Postal Act Of? Fox, where are you? It#8217;s been too long since I#8217;ve had a post to read from you. I miss you! @Melanie I#8217;m here.

I#8217;m working on a crazy writing project which I can#8217;t spill the beans on yet. I miss you guys lots. I miss posting to the blog lots. Sting Film? (tears) I hope to talk about postal 1879, what I#8217;m up to sooooon. I promise to be back as Squawky as ever. I am so touched you miss me. #128578; Melanie Reformed Spender says. I suppose I can forgive you since it#8217;s for film, a writing project. Does Periphery Mean? My regular round of sting PF blogs is good, but I like the Foxy flair. Good post, If you have any experience with big notable companies.. do not be afraid to throw the name around, it will only improve your self branding. Excellent article! Very insightful.

I reviewed my resume and I did pretty good. Postal Act Of? I had a lot of #8220;responsible fors#8221; which will be removed. I thinkt he reason so many resumes have thes words/phrases is because they appear in many of the job descriptions. So people think if I parrot their requirements on my resume I will look better to sting, the hiring manager. I#8217;m a junior in college.

I have been preparing my resume for my graduation. We have a career services department at Why Did they Die? Essay my college. I had one of the women look over sting my resume. Some of the closing are made:, corrections she made were adding these words to the resume. Maybe she should take a look at this site. Foxy! Your legions of fans miss you#8230;. Man, you could be writing a book in this time. Sting? Hope the project is going well #128578; Dustin Klein says.

Great article, and Greek Philosophers very true. The number one thing to sting film, remember when writing resumes has to martin foreign policy, be DETAILS. What an awesome series! Thanks for sting, helping me punch up my resume. Interesting you are advising people to Why Did they Die? Romeo, demonstrate they over estimate as a rule of thumb.

Not sure that adds value to CVs. #8221; #8230; three months before deadline#8221; highlights poor estimating skills. Sting Film? There is a balance between bullish advertising and are made: making yourself look like a grabbing budget player. At the end of the sting, day even if one was given a lofty deadline by a client, professionalism should compel us all to tell them so and re-plan. What Does Periphery? I love this post. Thanks for the info. I need to check my resume to make sure that I#8217;m doing things right.

I am reading everywhere about computer systems that scan for key words. Sting? Many of these terms you veto are #8216;key words#8217; that are in Essay Greek the job advertisements. Sting Film? Wouldn#8217;t getting rid of these terms hinder your resume because of this? @Mary Scannable resume keywords are mostly found in these categories: * Degrees or Certifications. * University or College Names. When? * Software or Hardware Packages. I#8217;ve never searched a resume for the words #8220;responsible for#8221;. Seriously. #128521; Great article and sting film content. I wonder your thoughts on Greek Philosophers brevity. Many of the examples you provided here have a longer string of words to film, replace the one #8216;sucky#8217; word#8230;. I just got this link via Twitter, and have shared it with many already! GREAT advice!

I#8217;d like to add that using industry and about Greek Philosophers job specific keywords when detailing your accomplishments, and tailoring your resume to the actual job posting will also help. Again, great tips, and I will be adding a link to this post for my clients. Love this article. I do have one more tip and/or something to keep in sting mind when editing your resumes: although phrases such as #8220;detail-oriented#8221;, #8220;team player#8221;, and policy #8220;hard working#8221; are generic and more often than not just FILLER words in film a resume, it#8217;s important to note that most companies don#8217;t have the resources to Why Did Die? Romeo and Juliet Essay, individually review resumes#8230;so they use software that scans resumes for keywords and only selects those which have a high percentage match of sting film those specific keywords which directly affects those which fall onto the Hiring Manager#8217;s desk. Closing Entries? So sometimes those filler words will get your resume into the right hands. And sometimes they just suck! It#8217;s important to tailor your resume to the specific job posting#8230; Great list of sucky words. I have two additions#8230; #8220;Synergy#8221; this word makes me want to spew. #8220;Proven track record#8221; if everyone read your article, they will understand why this is a frustrating phrase. I also read recently that it is the most commonly used phrase on resumes. Great list. I see resumes every day that have these mistakes and no factual backing.

I call them #8220;fluff resumes#8221; and am sure that when I was looking for my first job had all the film, same mistakes in my own. Well it doesn#8217;t hurt or loose anything if you try to what periphery mean, keep up with this article. For me I think this is helpful insight but not absolute. Vacancies have a lot of elements -timing, personality, skills and more. UnFortuantly there is a very simple explination as to why So many resumees today have these #8216;sucky words or phrases#8217;. Sting Film? I was In highschool 4 years ago for a very #8216;important#8217; class Called Co-operative education, where they teach students how to work with others, how to write resumees and how to successfully do an interview. They taught us 10 phrases to put on a resumee, the six Shown on this site were 6 of the 10. When i went for my interview, the employer said to martin van buren policy, me that everything i did was wrong, that typically she would not have hired me#8230; but she did because she had to. I have had resmuees out on potential employers desks with these 6 phrases on them for 5 years, and have never even gotten a call back, i knew something is wrong and sting film this site is the proof. The only thing worse than #8220;detail oriented#8221; is #8220;detail orientated.#8221; That one makes my teeth hurt!

I think if these are suck words then employers should not be writting them in the job description either. So many companies are looking for #8220;team players#8221; and #8220;detail oriented people#8221; that it#8217;s no wonder people put those words in their resume. THEY WANT THE JOB! My two cents#8230;. I#8217;m just about to write a CV (resume) to apply for an internship in New York (I#8217;m from Manchester, UK) and what does periphery had no clue where to start and how to make myself stand out from all the sting, other aplicants#8230; All the information provided above is excellent! I really feel inspired and about Greek hopefully will at least get an interview now with my new CV.

Please understand that I went to school when teachers required us to use words carefully and appropriately. Use of #8220;suck#8221; in sting your title demeans your hard work. Essay? Suck is film not a professional word and has no place in any publication for adults. I believe you used it to get attention and to make a point about using words that don#8217;t advance your cause. But when I read anything with suck in entries the title, I just shut down and film turn off. How did this word become such a throw-away, such an easy stand in for mean, so many other words? I say that we take the more difficult road and say what we mean. Sting Film? In this case, you mean words that deter HR representatives and martin foreign policy prospective employers from film taking your resume seriously.

You can consult a thesaurus or dictionary. I think that #8220;inappropriate#8221; would be a much better choice, especially if some of us older folk are reading your customers#8217; resumes. Very HELPFULLLL, I#8217;ll try to fix up my resume. I think it contains many sucks cause I used a some bad words#8230; and all that I can say is. I love this advice. We advise against they Die? Romeo and Juliet, the use of words like this and I think it really matters. Nice blog #128578; Amanda Higgins says. I couldn#8217;t agree more with this blog. I#8217;m a hiring manager and run a job search support group and I see hundreds of resumes that just don#8217;t say enough to me. I want tangible descriptions of what you#8217;ve done and how it was successful. I have a problem.

Show me you are the sting, solution. I agree with some of the Yema Filipino, posts that you do need a summary or headlines that quickly define your professional profile, but then get to film, the action. Good advice that I will pass on to my group. If you have little or no experience one thing you could say is, #8220;Recently graduated from (name college) seeking first job with fresh open mind to tailor work routines to fit (Company#8217;s) procedures.#8221; Recently graduated from martin van buren foreign policy University of Utah with an Associate Degree of Paralegal Studies, seeking first job with fresh open mind to tailor work routines to fit Bittle and Bitterman#8217;s procedures. Remind the employer that with an inexperience comes the prospect of training you the film, way he wants you to work. No bad habits to undo. Get the point. I#8217;m sure someone can come up with a better way of saying it but this get#8217;s the ball rolling.

I would like to share that some MNC uses a system to generate resumes based on some of the keywords meant for the position advertised. This saves time for van buren foreign policy, processing which equals cost-saving. You never know, that it#8217;s the system that is generating the sting, conclusion, even though you thought you might have did your best and the top-notch for that job. Nice article indeed. #3,4,5 often appear in job descriptions and martin policy I assume are key words used for electronic scanning of sting film resumes. About? Yes, some of film them are in my resume and will stay there. I#8217;m having enough trouble getting responses from my resumes and I don#8217;t want to Why Did Die? Romeo and Juliet Essay, make it harder by eliminating key words from sting them. Too bad this author hasn#8217;t realized that #8220;you#8217;ve got#8221; sucks, too. some i agree with some i don#8217;t. but i guess every opionion is at least worth a read in these hard economic times. Postal 1879? I think this article makes a great point but not all careers can be measured in numbers like most of the good examples. I don#8217;t think I have a single example where I reduced x by 15% or increased revenue by 10% over 3 months#8230;etc. but I am good at what I do. Besides, does this really mean anything to film, anyone?

I don#8217;t know the answer here but for some careers I think replacing vague buzz words with BS numbers and what does statistics isn#8217;t much better. Thoughts? Thanks, very helpful. Sting Film? Well I agree that language is stupid, but I take great exception with: #8220;Hiring managers can identify sucky words in seconds, leaving your resume work worthless.#8221; What planet are you from? Hiring Managers invented these sucky phrases they are on what does mean every job ad that#8217;s why they appear on people#8217;s resumes. People don#8217;t talk in sting film stupid, bureaucratic phrases by nature, they learn to do so in trying to work the system now the system is telling them not to? I originally PAID to have a professional resume written. Guess what term they used all throughout my resume? You guessed it #8220;Responsible for#8230;#8221; Now that really sucks! For those who think that words like #8220;Responsible for#8221; or #8220;detail-oriented#8221; are keywords: try to understand that not all words in job description are #8220;keywords#8221;.

They merely state that they need someone responsible for such and such tasks. They don#8217;t want to see them in your resume. Unless you want to look like absent-minded profane. #8220;Keywords#8221; are technical words, or words specific to the industry. Don#8217;t #8220;copy#8221; job descriptions blindly yes it#8217;s less work, but it makes your resume useless. Just what I needed! and yes my res was guilty of all 6 of your sucky words. It is too bad that rtard HR people screen resumes, but that is the way it is. Thanks again, this helped me! I disagree with pretty much every single thing wrote here. These are things that are considered almost mandatory by almost every single employer I know and even things I require when I look at resumes. I don#8217;t care about explicit facts, they take up too much room.

I want brief descriptions and we#8217;ll cover the rest in about Greek Philosophers an interview. I#8217;ve got the #8220;qualify and quantify#8221; pat under my word history, but I have some of those things in my #8220;Objective#8221; paragraph at sting film the top. Is that just as bad? Is my objective opener a dim witted dinosaur? Thanks, some of these helped me. The advice is sound, even if the examples aren#8217;t always very creative (almost all referenced a numerical stat to prove value, the absolute easiest scenario!). Plus, saying you worked within a diverse group of people #8220;to deliver financial reporting software three months before deadline#8221; doesn#8217;t even suggest your team dynamics are a strength. You may have accomplished that in spite of Yema Filipino Sweet you being a poor team player, meaning something else unmentioned is the sting, actual strength. These things can all be very hard (or impossible) to and Juliet, do when you don#8217;t have an easy out and sting you#8217;re intent on doing them correctly.

Having said that, you being so specific in your article is part of what made it more useful than most, as well as more open to Filipino Essay, criticism, so kudos! How about sting film, this one#8230; As opposed to . a dog person? cat person? The above statement is Why Did they and Juliet often seen on resumes for Human Resources or other service oriented jobs. Don#8217;t tell me you are one demonstrate it instead! @Steve Now that#8217;s a good one. You gave me a good laugh. #128578; I like every thing you have mentioned. Sting Film? I have seen so many resumes with #8220;who cares#8221; type words! However, I think everyone should write their resume appropriate to the position they are applying for. Some resumes need to be detailed and postal others need to be very brief. If I am applying for film, a job to policy, be a manager i will definitely put in more information. If i am applying for film, a server job at a restaurant, I would hope I dont have to explain too much.

It all is dynamic to the position one is applying to. These aren#8217;t really words but phrases. Yema De Moringa: Sweet Essay? Just wanted to say, it#8217;s all good really. Very helpful, I just got a better idea on how to sell mey skills being more specific, providing numbers, percentages costs#8230; etc etc rather than just saying, I contributed to sting, company#8217;s costs reduction by reducing man power, down times and material expenses. Thanks for these very helpful tips!#8230; I have been applying for administrative jobs for months, but I have only martin interviewed once. I am qualified for these positions, though I need to add more quantitative evidence to my resume. Film? My question for FOX is, should I change my name? It is Tamsi#8230; and I think there is a chance it is holding me back.

Your Mother says. this is helpful. A phrase like reduced customer support calls can be misleading. How did you do it? Reduced support staff. Yema Essay? Implemented and massive confusing phone menu system that customers hung up on. Or even made it so bad they didn#8217;t bother ever to phone again. I want to make it clear that this is sting neither a comment on the usefulness of the post nor it is martin van buren a personal vendetta against any of you out there who have contributed to the quality discussion of film course including the blogger.

Yes, it is a justified rant. My honest opinion is an outcome of experiences over many years of the so called HR industry which has become inefficient and fussy. It has become a machine with almost zero tolerance in terms of the input that it can process. It is so limited by Essay, its narrow compatibility with the human reality. Where is the H in the HR? [#8220;#8230;oh it was right there yesterday..god knows where is it now..huh! right they are loaded with work, isn#8217;t that good? right, you work at work, that#8217;s work!, that#8217;s how it works, but does it really work?#8221;] Listen up, you are not sitting there to get impressed by the stuff (resumes) that you read (. ). Sting Film? You are there to find a right match for van buren foreign policy, the job. That#8217;s it!

Somebody teach that wisdom to those thoughless recruiters?? If they choose to use some of that H in the HR, they#8217;d always remember that people are looking for jobs! and that most of them are probably desperate! The industry, always, starts a new trend/fad it wants jobseekers to follow so that you can sit on its seats comfortably and not get bored by the so called sucky words. Well, eventually to jobseekers#8217; misfortune, you get bored:) That simply means that you are not enjoying your work!:) isn#8217;t it?:) What#8217;s the sting, whole deal about #8216;if you cannot sell yourself well, you probably won#8217;t sell the Yema de Moringa: Filipino Sweet Essay, org either#8217;? Come on.. throw away your inertia. Don#8217;t sloth yourselves. Analyse!

Understand! Yours is sting film not the place to about, behave like audiences of sting film entertainment shows! Do the damn job! If you have no spheres to accept greater responsibility for martin, the industry that you are working within, then you quit! Words are words. Unfortunately they do not match telepathic perfection. They are USED to communicate. That#8217;s the sting, ONLY purpose. And HR industry is supposed to practice the Yema de Moringa: Sweet, art of subtle magic, to be the instrument of change for organisations not to change the bloody trends (. ). Jobseekers are not there to scratch your ego or please your senses. When irritation starts riding your sense of sting judgement, it#8217;s time for reflection. Mean? Don#8217;t give them jobseekers reasons to wonder why the HR industry is thriving all over the globe.

Surely, if it did its job well, right people would find right jobs, right companies would find right candidates and one word #8216;stability#8217; would replace the film, whole HR conspiracy theory. But so far a fat fussy spoilt bored brat throwing a fit rules the sad reality. Best advise I have came across on the use of act of 1879 key words #8212; the examples are great#8230; #8230;reworking on my CV and Cover Letters. Thank you for sting, the information. I#8217;ve read all this article and learned a lot. But this topic about words or phrases that suck is a little contradictory as many of those words are actually listed in the job descriptions and are keywords. Words like: Experienced, Excellent communication skills, detail oriented, a team player, etc. Does Periphery? are very common in job descriptions for restaurant servers for film, instance. Van Buren Foreign? Do you recommend to avoid those words in all cases? Thank you again for your information.

This isn#8217;t really useful to sting, me since I#8217;ve never had a job before, so I have to be vague about what I did. Giving away that I have no experience is worse than being unclear. Van Buren Policy? So what do you do when what you were #8220;responsible for#8221; doesn#8217;t lend itself to numerical results? I#8217;m in the legal profession and while the number of cases won might suffice, that#8217;s far from the kind of description of skills and sting results employers are looking to receive. Prepared 37 cases for about Philosophers, litigation at once? Drafted 42 demand letters in one day? I really like the post, but finding it hard to sting, use in my particular profession. Totally agree that these terms are meaningless on resumes, but what about in job postings by Essay, companies? Can you make another post entitled #8220;6 words that make your job description suck#8221;?

I keep hearing that you need to quantify your resume. However, I am in marketing, not sales and have no access to sting film, the numbers. They usually say marketing has no ROI, so how do I get around that? Colleges need to de Moringa: Sweet Essay, instruct students about writing useful resumes. I#8217;m still underemployed. How can I erase dead-end jobs I#8217;ve had to accept in hard times? Since I#8217;ve graduated I#8217;ve been unable to get meaningful experience. Internships don#8217;t always provide the experience you need in sting film the field you want to work in. My love for my career has made me think about other avenues.

I never worked in they Die? and Juliet Essay sales or had to beat deadlines in a business environment. Oh, well! I don#8217;t know#8230;in IT one common and sting film useful type of hybrid resume includes a short Skills section followed by a more detailed chronological Experience section under which you include highlights and accomplishments. I think it#8217;s unnecessary to turn your skills section into a redundant experience section if the those skills are validated by specific accomplishments in the other section. You have made some interesting points. I find that I am inclined to bang my head against the desk at this point. I am now concerned with how many mistakes may be found in the cover letters and Greek resumes that have left my mailbox for sting film, points across Ohio. Thank you for a taking the time to put this together. Does Periphery Mean? Best part I now have something to do with the four hours I usually sleep! Seriously though, thank you.

Great tips, as valid today as when they were written. Possibly more so with so many resumes out there on the market. Have a small bone to pick with #4 though from a recruiting standpoint, it#8217;s good for your audience to sting, know that yes, you#8217;re a great team player, but if you#8217;ve also worked solo on projects, say that as well. Act Of 1879? Anything mentioning #8220;team performance#8221; needs to emphasize *your* role on the team. Great post, though. I found most of sting film these mistakes in my first heading #8220;Qualifications#8221;, but the rest is full of quality details! Wow, I#8217;m guessing many recruiters didn#8217;t read the real stuff#8230; The advice in this article is foreign fine if you#8217;re looking for a sales job, but what about regular jobs that are just ordinary such as waitress, barista, receptionist, day are worker, CNA, custodial#8230;the jobs MOST new non-college grad jobseekers are looking for? You can#8217;t measure those kinds of jobs by sting, percentages. Vanessa Naylon says. #8220;Spearheaded#8221; would be my #7.

I#8217;ve heard the exact opposite they Romeo and Juliet Essay, of this. I just graduated from College 2 years ago and I am still seeking work, so perhaps my professor is wrong, and film I need to change things, but I was told that professionals still have very busy schedules to keep and that hiring someone is usually just thrown on top of those duties. Does? Therefore, the first thing they will often look at is how wordy the resume is, and throw it out based on that. Writing #8220;Short and Sweet#8221; was always what I was told. #8220;Tell them what they need to know in as little words as possible. No fleshing out the english and being proper. Builtpoints, lists, and 1-4 word sentences are a resume-readers favorite things. Now I know this was written a few years ago, so have things changed again, or am I being taught wrongly?

The only difficulty with applying this advice today (3 years after it was written) is that a lot of organizations that collect resumes through an online portal use computer programs to sift through the first cut of resumes. In my experience, a number of the sting film, #8220;sucky#8221; words/phrases are often precisely what that first-cut computer is looking for (in some cases one gets the act of 1879, best results by nearly repeating the sting, qualifications listed in postal the job ad). Very aggravating, to sting, be honest. When I worked in retail probably 95% of all the resumes came through me, and I could share some horror stories (one kid came in with their mom and she filled out the application form for postal 1879, him). Sting Film? But one of the martin, worst was a guy who came in sting film with a three page resume (it was a slow day so I did read it), that had nothing to do with the job he was applying for Essay about, (or any other in the store) and was so obnoxiously rude to sting, me it wasn#8217;t even funny. Postal 1879? So while I agree with the merits of this article, it means nothing if what you put on your resume isn#8217;t relevant.

And it doesn#8217;t hurt to be nice to the person you#8217;re giving it too either. (The way I see it, if you#8217;re rude to film, them, you#8217;re not going to be polite to Romeo and Juliet, the customers, now are you?) Enjoyed this post. Just ran a search on my CV for all of sting those 6 terms and was quite pleased that I#8217;ve used none of them! Something I learned a few Years ago has always kept me in good stead: F.A.B = Feature, Analyse, Benefit. For example if you are a Team Manager, that is the feature. Closing Entries? So #8216;analyse#8217; it#8230;.. Team Manager of sting how many people, what did you do to act of 1879, support those people, etc. What was the #8216;benefit to those people and to the company? So, #8216;Team Manager#8217; suddenly becomes: Effective Management, Coaching and Development of a 12 member team ensuring demanding national sales/service targets and sting film business objectives are achieved whilst delivering an 8% Year on Year increase in turnover. I just made that up in around 10 seconds#8230;.but if you think about it and apply it to what does periphery mean, your situation you could probably come up with something better, whilst being factual.

Loved the article! I have written and read several articles on what to avoid or what to include in a resume. Sting Film? Your straight forward approach gets the job done. You made me giggle to myself as I read through your examples. I see them so often and they just make me shake my head. Thank you for martin policy, the blunt and sting entertaining method. Thank you for Yema de Moringa: Filipino, the information. Sting? I’ve read all this article and learned a lot. But this topic about words or phrases that suck is a little contradictory as many of those words are actually listed in the job descriptions#8230;#8230;Colleges should also teach the students about how to write resumes#8230;.Otherwise a well written blog#8230;. Excellent post. Quantifying your results via numbers, percentages, or awards, is an excellent strategy to use to ensure your resume is when closing are made: effective.

In addition, only include information which is relevant and recent (within the sting, past 10-15 years) to avoid age discrimination. Great advice! Drew Roark, CPRW. I#8217;m starting to think that half of the posters on here are mediocre workers who have no accomplishments to list because they haven#8217;t strived for more than the bare minimum. If this isn#8217;t the case, one should be led to Philosophers, believe that they could find a way to quantify their experience and sting not necessarily in Why Did they Die? terms of sting numbers. On a side note, I#8217;ve also come to the realization that applications and Essay resumes aren#8217;t a one-road route. It varies by industry and employer. Everything from a large corporation to sting film, an entrepreneur looking for their next investment consider different resume approaches appropriate or desirable.

Jack Matov says. Um, how exactly are you going to entries are made:, quantify without numbers? #8220;A lot#8221;, #8220;a little#8221;, #8220;some#8221;, #8220;very few#8221;, #8220;not very many#8221;. Not much of a quantification. I have tried both these styles. I can honestly say I saw no difference in outcome. It is almost impossible to quantify a secretarial or reception job. But you can give examples of unique responsibilities you were given, or new skills you acquired. I currently tailor my resume to the job description, but if you are attempting to apply for several positions in one company via an online tool, that is impossible, so it becomes generic.

My last employer has cut almost 2000 positions from a 6000 strong work force. I was laid off, rehired within a month, laid off the sting film, following year. My co worker had a BA and was working as a receptionist, and had been averaging 3 applications a month for 4 years. It seems it is no longer what you know but who you know. For example, for three jobs I sent applications for there were 55, 69 and 93 acceptable applications passed to the search committees. Two I did not get interviews for. Unfortunately this company also has a rule that the committee must interview 4 applicants, but most of the positions are already taken by the interim worker. The third is my best hope, as I have a friend who has spoken to the manager for me. Greek? That particular manager is old school, and will probably be looking for the buzz words. I also have glowing written references from previous employers, but as most applications are placed online, I have no way of submitting them, so I usually fall back on the #8221; written references available upon request#8221; line but have yet to be asked for them.

Excellent article! So many of us who are over 50 and in sting film the habit of writing resumes using these words have had a hard time rewording these phrases. Your article really help me see in back and policy while how I could better present and sell myself in my resume! Thank You! Edward Dickinson says. the most important thing is to sting, explain what you done. This will set you apart. when you take your ownership. Essay Philosophers? If you want to say you helped in some way give an example of what you did to enable the benefit to the company or others in making it transpire. just saying: helped 5 people is too bland. you have to show them and explain. Remember you only have seconds to get the sting, employers attention. the power statements have to flow and what periphery mean the words have to be in film away that entices the employer to does, interview you or hire you on the spot. follow this frame work#8212; what you done , then what was the issue that needed to be resolved, then finally what was the benefit to the companies and others were when providing the solution if any. The employer would ask you such things in an interview as well but they want what results you have provided. Numbers, percentages, and comparisons. In doing so you position yourself to the employer as if in a way that says this is what i have done and film this is when closing entries are made: what i can do and sting film this is what the results are to become even better if you hire me. Yema De Moringa: Filipino Sweet? if you want what i can only provide then lets come to sting film, the table and get this contract done for an agreement to work together.

There are words that say you done something but you want to show them in your words from the field your in when explaining. of I helped contributed assisted results. these are just as bad. Postal Act Of? because powerstatements are taking ownership of results. purpose is to sting film, show when explaining how you did the things you have done in a concise way. Qualified new projects to sensitive behavioral indicators for tightening inadequate queries and in researching enriched efficiency from 50% to 80%. don#8217;t mean to tease any one here with this and wanting to Die? Romeo and Juliet, know more about what results i get for companies. This is how it is always been done and film it is to get to where your trying to go and that#8217;s to get the job. Everyone wants to when closing, be successful and get the position they desire to settle down with in sting film life. Following up is the another way to martin van buren foreign policy, say i was there then and you needed more time for the answers i always had that i can provide now when you hire me. Just showing the sting, employer you are a one of a kind person is un avoidable. Mean? Jennifer Robledo says. My resume had all of film these words all of your #8220;Bad#8221; examples. Writing Better University Essays/Referencing. By referencing the sources you use in your essay, you do a number of things. First of all, you comply with an academic convention. Secondly, you make your essay look more professional. In fact, it not only sting film, looks more professional, but its argument becomes more powerful. Thirdly, you allow others to check your sources. This is often only a hypothetical issue, but a look through the list of your references will allow others to judge your argument quickly. Fourthly, you acknowledge your sources and thus admit that like everyone else, you’re a dwarf on the shoulders of the Yema de Moringa: Filipino Sweet giants.

The essential bits of referencing require you to provide enough information to sting film, others so that they can identify the source. What exactly is meant by about Greek Philosophers enough is open to sting film, debate, and this is also where conventions come in. Essential is that you do provide references. Ideally, you would do so properly. It’s not so difficult, and the sooner you get into the habit of referencing, the better. There are two forms to do the martin van buren foreign policy referencing: including them as footnotes, or use a variation of the Harvard system. Your institution may have a preference, or even a house style. In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system.

The Harvard system is sting also known as author/date, and will be described here in more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is Yema de Moringa: Essay essentially based on sting film, somebody else’s work, you should attribute the source. Does Periphery? You do this by stating the author(s) and the year of the publication you consulted. Where the name of the author occurs naturally in the text, it does not need to sting, be repeated. The references are usually included at the end of a sentence, or where inappropriate in a place where the text flow is not interrupted too much, such as in front of a comma. Does Mean? This may be necessary, for example, if only the first half of your sentence is sting film based on closing are made:, someone else’s work. Switzerland seems to be the film ideal place for studying the effects of direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the author is included in does periphery, brackets, together with the year of publication.

Some styles put a comma between the two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Sting? Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol). Where there are more than two authors, the name of the first author is given, followed by et al. (which literally means and others ): (Almeder et al. , 2001). Some styles put et al. into italics, others don’t. If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999). If there are very many references to an argument, use your own judgement to select the most relevant ones. What should you reference? Basically references should be included to Essay Philosophers, any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite.

However, statements of general nature need not be attributed to sting, anyone. A statement that the sky is blue alone does not require a reference. However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. If you use the exact words of an periphery mean, author (quotation), you’ll need to give the number of the page where you copy from. This is sting needed so anyone can quickly check the original words, should he or she feel so. See the policy separate section on quotes. It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for sting film such a statement, because you have not actually read it.

Can you really be sure this is what Weber said or meant? The technically correct trick is to add cited in after the reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the work you consulted, and this includes the year of publication. Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the correct year can be helpful. Similarly, even if a book is merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the policy year of the edition you consulted. The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the original date. Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to sting film, circumvent this issue is to give both years: the year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted.

Sometimes slashes are used between the dates (/ sign), others prefer the used of square brackets ([ and ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 [1774]). Another small issue occurs where an author published more than one book or article in what periphery, a single year, and you want to cite more than one of them. The trick here is to add letters from the alphabet after the year to identify which of the works you refer to. Use the sting film letter a for the first of your references, the letter b for the second and so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the text, you give the family name of the author, followed by the year of the publication.

Always cite the text you consulted, because in Greek Philosophers, the end it’s your responsibility that the references are correct. At the end of your essay you should include a list of references. Such a list of references provides more details than just the name of the author and the year of publication. It’s this list that allows identifying the work cited. Each work you cited in the essay is cited once, and listed in alphabetical order. Note that a bibliography and list of references is not technically the same. A bibliography is a list of relevant sources that may or may not be cited in sting, the main text.

References are the sources you cited, even if they are rather trivial. Use the heading references for your references. For books, you put the family name of the does periphery author(s) and their initials, followed by the year of publication in brackets, the title in sting film, italics, the place of publication, and finally the name of the publisher. If there are editors, give their names instead of the authors’. If there is a subtitle to the title, this is usually separated using colons (: sign). Postal 1879? Where there are more than four authors, it’s common to sting film, use et al. after the first three, but some styles insist on citing all authors. Periphery Mean? Sometimes a book is film co-published by two publishers, and closing entries this can be indicated by using a slash (/ sign). Where you give the editors rather than the actual authors, you indicate this by adding (eds) after their names, or (ed.) if there is only one. The title is capitalized. Sting Film? For example: Anderson, C. Zelle, C. Yema Essay? (eds) (1998) Stability and Change in German Elections: How Electorates Merge, Converge, or Collide , London, Praeger.

Granovetter, M. (1974) Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers , Chicago, Chicago University Press. Sting? Grass, G. (1963) Katz und Maus , Neuwied am Rhein, Rowolth/Hermann Leuchterhand. Hall, S. (ed.) (1997) Representation: Cultural Representations and when closing are made: Signifying Practices , London, Sage. Halsey, A., Heath, A. Ridge, J. (1980) Origins and sting Destinations , Oxford, Clarendon Press. Chapters in a book are cited separately, especially if the book is edited. Closing Entries? You give the family name of the film author and martin policy his or her initial, the year, the name of the sting chapter in single speech marks (‘ and ’ sign; not capitalized), followed by the word in , and postal act of 1879 the name and sting year of the editor(s). If you cite only Why Did Die? and Juliet, one chapter, you can give the whole reference at the end; otherwise it’s enough to give the name and year of the editor. In this case, however, the film book itself needs to be included in martin van buren foreign, the list of references, too. For example: Allen, J. (1995) ‘Global worlds’ in Allen, J. Massey, D. (eds) (1995).

Hardin, R. (1990) ‘Public choice versus democracy’ in Chapman, J. Wertheimer, A. (eds) (1990). Leroy, P. Verhagen, K. (2003) ‘Environmental politics: Society’s capacity for political response’ in Blowers, A. Hinchliffe, S. Sting? (eds) (2003) Environmental Responses , Chichester, Wiley. An entry in a printed encyclopaedia or a dictionary can be cited if it was a chapter in a book. About Philosophers? The editors are often given on the front of the reference book. For example: Jackman, R. Sting? (2001) ‘Social capital’ in Smelser, N. Baltes, P. (eds) (2004). Journal articles are cited in a way that is quite similar to chapters in a book.

The main difference really is that details about the volume and page numbers are included, too. Die? And Juliet Essay? The reference starts with the name and initial of the author, the year in brackets, the title of the article in single speech marks (not capitalized), followed by the name of the journal in film, italics (capitalized), and further details. The details of journals are commonly abbreviated as follows: the volume number followed by a colon and the page numbers of the article. If there are different numbers to a volume, this is indicated by including it in brackets before the colon, if known. Online journals may not have page numbers. For example: Burt, R. (1987) ‘Social contagion and about Greek innovation: Cohesion versus structural equivalence’, American Journal of Sociology , 92:1287–335. Thoits, P. Sting Film? Hewitt, L. (2001) ‘Volunteer work and martin van buren foreign well-being’, Journal of sting film, Health and Social Behaviour , 42(2):115–31. Small, C. (1999) ‘Finding an invisible history: A computer simulation experiment (in virtual Polynesia)’, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation , 2(3).

Valente, T. (1996) ‘Social network thresholds in the diffusion of information’, Social Networks , 18(1):69–89. Pages on the internet should be cited where used. You should bear in when entries are made:, mind the quality of the sting film site before citing from it, but if you use a web site, reference it, too. There are many internet sites that are perfectly acceptable as sources for your essays. The reference includes the when entries name of the author and initial, the year in brackets, the title of the document in italics, the sting film word online in square brackets, the place of publication, the publisher, the what does periphery words available from : followed by the URL, and the date when the document was accessed in sting film, brackets.

The date is important, because unlike printed works, web sites often change their content or even disappear. Many web sites include a copyright note at the bottom, giving you an indication when the content was written. For example: Moser, P. (2005) Politik im Kanton Zurich—eine Synthese [online], Zurich, Statistisches Amt des Kantons Zurich, available from: http://web.archive.org/web/20051224111845/http://www.statistik.zh.ch/statistik.info/pdf/2005_15.pdf [accessed 27th October 2005]. Chan, T. Goldthorpe, J. Entries? (2004) Social Status and sting film Newspaper Readership [online], Oxford, Oxford University, available from: http://users.ox.ac.uk/ sfos0006/papers/news4.pdf [accessed 31st March 2005]. Newspaper articles are very similar to journal articles in the way they are cited. The key difference is that rather than the volume, the date is given. Postal Act Of? The reference therefore includes the film name and initial of the author, the year of publication in brackets, the title in single speech marks, the name of the newspaper in they Romeo and Juliet Essay, italics (capitalized), the date, and finally the page where the article was found. For one page it’s customary to use the sting abbreviation p. , for articles running over two or more pages, the postal 1879 abbreviation pp. is sting common.

For example: Cockburn, P. Usborne, D. (2004) ‘Burning with anger: Iraqis infuriated by new flag that was designed in London’, The Independent , 28th April, pp.2–3. Handouts from a lecture can be referenced and should be referenced if they are used as the basis of what you write. Greek Philosophers? It’s normally a better idea not to use lecture notes, but try to find the original referred to in the lecture. Not only sting film, will you have more control over what was actually said, but also can your readers more easily access books and journal article than lecture handouts. The reference to a lecture handout includes the name and initial of the lecturer, the year in bracket, the foreign title of the sting film handout in single speech marks, the words lecture notes distributed in followed by the name of the course in italics, the word at and the name of van buren foreign policy, your institution, the place, and date of the lecture. For example: Burt, S. (2005) ‘Survey sampling and film administration’, lecture notes distributed in Survey Research Methods at Cambridge University, Cambridge, 9th February 2005. Personal conversations are not commonly considered good sources, but if they are what you use as the basis of your essay, you should include such conversations.

It’s usually a good idea to have another reference to are made:, a printed piece, but sometimes this is not an option. Film? In terms of giving the reference, personal conversations are very easy: the Greek name of the person you spoke to, the film year in brackets, the words conversation with the what mean author and sting film the date of the conversation. For example: Smith, E. (2004) conversation with the author 6th July 2004. The same format can also be used for personal e-mail, or instant messengers. Once again, bear in mind the credibility of your sources. With e-mail messages it’s customary to include the Essay about Philosophers e-mail address of the sender in brackets after the film name, but it’s essential that you obtain consent from the author.

The subject line of the Yema Essay e-mail is often included as the film title. With all forms of personal conversation, the issue of 1879, consent is important. It’s always a very good idea to check with the sting film author first. There are sometimes cases that are not so straightforward as the average book or journal article. For everything there is a solution in the academic conventions. If you refer to musical works, television programmes, or pieces of art, check with your institution how this should be done.

If everything else fails, remember the function of referencing, and Essay provide a reasonable amount of information for others to chase the work. Common problems include the lack of film, authors, unpublished documents, or lack of publisher. Where there is no author, often there is an organization. Put the name of the van buren organization. If there is sting film no-one, it’s customary to put the word “Anon” instead of the author’s name. For example: IDEA (1998) Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers [online], Stockholm, International IDEA, available from: http://archive.idea.int/women/parl/toc.htm [accessed 28th February 2006]. UN Statistics Division (2006) Social Indicators [online], New York, UN Statistics Division, available from: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/inc-eco.htm [accessed 20th February 2006]. Sometimes the year of about, a document is not known. Where you have a rough idea, you can put a c before the date, such as in (c.1999).

Where you just have no clue, there is no need to sting film, panic: simply put the word unknown instead of the year. Documents that are unpublished as such, for de Moringa: example a thesis or a draft article you were sent, should come with the indication that they are not published. Sting Film? This is easily done by including the word unpublished in brackets at the end of the reference. With articles sent to Greek, you, you should always ask permission to cite; just like you would with an ordinary e-mail. For theses it’s common to include the kind of thesis after the title, such as PhD thesis or MA thesis . Where the film name or place of the publisher is periphery unknown a very simple solution is used: leave the information blank. This is particularly an issue with internet sites. Including the URL is in this case much more helpful than trying to guess the name of the publisher. Course materials provided to you are treated very similar to the lecture handouts.

Give the name of the sting author, the postal 1879 year in brackets, the course code if there is one, the course title in italics (capitalized), the kind of material and its title in single speech marks, place of publication, and publisher. For example: Peake, S. (2003) U216 Environment , Video 4 ‘Shanghai Boom’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The Open University (2004) DD305 Personal Lives and Social Policy , CD-ROM 2 ‘Interviews and Interviewing’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The capitalization of titles may seem a bit confusing, but it follows a simple logic: it’s the film main title that is capitalized.

In the case of a book, the main title is that of the does book. In the case of journal articles, on the other hand, the film main title is thought to be that of the journal itself. It might be confusing that within the Yema de Moringa: Filipino Essay journal, the title of an sting, article often is capitalized. Capitalization is not very hard to achieve. Put in capital letters are all nouns, proper names, the Essay Philosophers first word, verbs, and sting film adjectives. This is in fact almost everything.

Not put in when, capital letters are words like and , in , or , or with . Unfortunately most word processors don’t capitalize properly when told to, and put every single word in capital letters, including the ands and withins that should not come with capital letters. Different publishers have different house styles, and you might come across a title with a word you would normally spell differently. This is common with British and American variants, but there are other words, too, such as post-modernity . Film? No matter how strongly you might disagree with the spelling, you should always use the original spelling in the references. It’s perfectly fine to Essay about, change them in your essay itself, but not in the references. A good manual of style, such as the film Oxford Style Manual (Ritter, 2003) will be able to give you further guidance. Many course providers have their own preferences or house styles, and it’s advisable to follow these conventions. Where there are no house styles, using a system such as the one outlined in this guide in a consistent manner will be well received. You’ll find full references to every work mentioned in this book at the end. It’s difficult to write about referencing without mentioning plagiarism.

Plagiarism describes the act or result where you take the words or ideas of somebody else and present them as your own. Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct and can be punished severely. Most importantly, however, your reputation is on the line. The origin of the word plagiarism gives you an act of 1879, idea what others will think of you when you plagiarize. The word goes back to the Latin plagiarius , a thief and kidnapper—in particular a child snatcher and somebody abducting slaves. The modern use in academia brands you a literary thief (OED, 2005). There are a number of reasons why plagiarism occurs. The worst case is sting deliberate plagiarism (for whatever reason).

Careless work may lead to plagiarism, but is not commonly considered as severe an offence as the deliberate case. Careless work is often a sign of students working too closely to the original, and Yema de Moringa: Filipino Sweet Essay this can be easily remedied. Without changing your habit, simply by including references to where you got the ideas from, and putting speech marks where you quote, you technically are done. In practice, you still might rely too much on sting film, the original and not deliver as good an essay as you could. Deliberate plagiarism, often motivated by laziness, can’t be remedied directly. At the time, it may seem a reasonable risk to copy from the postal 1879 internet, but is film it really worth it? Bear in mind that there is what something in for you, too—that is something in addition to the grades. The more you write, the easier it gets. If you work too closely to the original, there is a simple solution: don’t write the film essay with the books in front of entries, you. Sting Film? By so doing, there is very little danger that you copy word by Essay about Philosophers word.

In a way, you force yourself to sting, make the material your own: and that is de Moringa: Filipino Sweet a good thing—it makes a better argument, your essay will be more original, and not least, you’ll also get better grades. Rather than having the original works in front of you, try using your notes. As you still will need to put those references for the ideas you take from others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to put a proper reference. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text. When checking the essay, it’s hard not to notice the triple X; and there is always the search facility in the word processor. By putting a place holder, I can get on with the job of writing without interrupting my thoughts. Equally important, I leave some traces indicating to myself that there is some more work to be done: finding the proper reference, for example.

If you think plagiarism is hard to sting film, detect by your marker, think again. There are a great number of martin foreign, signs that give plagiarized work away. Technology-wise, your markers are likely to sting, have the same possibilities than you have if not more. If you can copy and paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for your marker to find it on a search engine, again. It would, of course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is no longer easy to spot. Usually, however, this is just as much work as writing the de Moringa: Filipino essay yourself.

Just to give you an idea, the markers of your essay will not only have access to the same search engines than you have. There is software to scan essays for duplicates; and sting many institutes even have access to essay banks (sites on the internet where complete essays are sold). The most successful tool, however, is probably the human brain with its incredible ability to remember. If you copy from Yema Filipino Sweet, a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Sting Film? If you copy from a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on about Philosophers, the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the core reading. Film? Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to Essay Greek Philosophers, read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of sting, whatever issues is set in the question. An even easier sign is having the same paragraph twice in the same essay, for example. There are more subtle signs, too, such as sudden changes in style or formatting.

Many people are unaware of how idiosyncratic one’s writing style is. They are in fact so individual that writing styles can be used to determine how many people wrote a document, such as the Christian Bible (Jakoblich, 2001). Writing style includes the tenses we use, the level of formality, our own choice of when entries, words, the kinds of metaphors we put, whether we use American or British English, choices over punctuation, the length of sentences, or the use of specialist terms. Typographic signs include font size, choices of where to break paragraphs, spaces in between lines, and sting things like proper m- and when closing entries are made: n-dashes (when copying from electronic articles). The presence or lack of references is often an easy sign: for example, where there are many references inside the text, but few at the end, or where the citation style changes within a single essay. A marker may get suspicious where there is suddenly a section with many references, or suddenly none. Sting Film? Sometimes, students even include hyperlinks in references when copying from martin foreign, electronic journals; and have them automatically underlined by the word processor. Even where you take care of these issues, a paragraph copied from the sting film internet will very unlikely link well with the rest of what mean, your essay. The style may be inappropriate, or just different. Essays from an essay bank may be internally consistent, but very rarely are they really relevant to the exact question you have been set.

In summary, you can avoid plagiarism easily. This is done by writing freely without having the books right in front of you. Instead, work with your notes, and take care to put references where you use the ideas from sting, others. Don’t use the internet to copy from, no matter how tempting it is. It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly. Knowing your citations from your quotations is useful when writing essays. It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly. Citations are about ideas you take from others.

Quotations are about the exact words used by others. This is really the whole distinction. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the words of someone else, you quote. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is Essay about Greek a quotation, because I use the exact same words Blankenhorn did. However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only use the idea, not the exact words. When putting a reference, the difference between a citation and a quotation is that for a quotation we always put a page number. This is done to enable the reader to check the words in film, the original context.

In the list of references at foreign policy, the end of the text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in sting, the text, and Romeo and Juliet Essay enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the main text by sting film indenting the quotations, and usually putting in Essay Greek Philosophers, a slightly smaller font. Longer means about 3 to sting, 4 lines or more. For example: It is van buren policy true that many voters may be voting for reasons wholly unconnected with social inequalities in any of the three dimensions. They may attach greater importance to some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to do. (Runciman, 1966, p.136) When quoting someone else, you should take great care to film, copy the words exactly. Sometimes, you might want to change a quote slightly in postal act of 1879, order to make it fit your essay.

If these changes are substantial, you should use your own words and cite the work instead. If the changes are small, use square brackets to indicate that you have changed the text. For example, you might quote Rawls (1999, p.87) that intelligent people don’t “[deserve their] greater natural capacity”. I have included the words that I changed in square brackets, leaving the rest the same. This indicates to my readers that the words in square brackets are not the exact same as Rawls used. For reference, the original reads: “No one deserves his greater natural capacity” (p.87). I made the changes, because I wrote about intelligent people, and Rawls was talking in film, more general terms.

Whilst quotations can lighten up an essay, you should not rely on them too much. Your own writing is much more important, and often text you quote was written for a different purpose. Essay Greek? The consequence is film that the quotations may be relevant in content (what is when are made: being said), but in terms of style don’t fit well with what you wrote. If you rely too much on film, quotations, you run the risk that your readers will think that you maybe don’t really know what you’re writing about: that you have not understood the material well enough. When writing an essay, particularly when writing an extended essay, it’s easiest to put the references whilst you write. This is the case, because you still know where you got the idea from. I keep a place holder to what periphery mean, remind myself that a reference is needed if I can’t remember the author right away. Film? Often, I will know at least some of it, and write this down.

By putting a place holder rather than chasing the reference right away, I can stay focused on the writing. What Does Periphery Mean? However, I also indicate that the sting film essay is not completed. Place holders like (Baudrillard, XXX) or (XXX last week’s reading) will help me find the full references once I completed the are made: essay or section. References are needed whenever you write an academic piece of writing. Even where you can get away without referencing, by including references your essay will be taken more serious. It’s a good habit to put references all the time, so when you really need to—such as in your thesis—you’ll not struggle, or spend days trying to find out how to reference a chapter in a book.

There are a number of software packages such as Endnote , Refworks , Scholar’s Aid Lite , or Bibus that help you putting references. Sting Film? These computer applications interact with your word processor, and Greek automate much of the referencing process. Film? They manage citations, and Greek usually let you search libraries and film journal databases. Useful and flexible as they are, such software packages need some time to get used to. It’s thus a good idea to familiarize yourself with their working before the deadline is 1879 menacing. For example, make sure you know how to put page numbers for quotations.

Even if you don’t use a dedicated computer program to manage your references, it might be useful to collect references in a separate file. So, after completing your essay, copy all the references to a separate file. The next time you cite the same paper, it’ll be a simple case of copying and pasting, without the work of formatting the sting reference. Keeping the full references with your notes can safe a great deal of time, too.

GGrading: Digital Grading Made Free and Easy with Google Apps. Digital what-not is all the rage these days. Digital natives. Film? Digital literacy. Digital classrooms. Digital futures. Digital humanities.

This march of technology puts tremendous pressure on all levels of the education system, but I think it puts teachers, like me, into a particularly awkward position. A brave new world is upon us — whether we like it or not, whether we understand it or not — and about, if we are to reach our students, to make our teaching relevant to them, we have to embrace that world, however stumbling and awkward it might feel. We must find ways to sting film, enable our students, as Spencer Dunford put it, to be better able to succeed in a world where the presence of technology is ever increasing. Martin Van Buren Foreign? 1. It is one thing to film, know this — and I think we all do — but it is quite another to know what to do about it. That is, it's difficult to know how to begin to Essay about, move from our traditional modes of teaching to something more suited to film, this new digital world.

I decided to take on de Moringa: Filipino Sweet the revolution alone, without fancy software and sting, gadgetry, and with only the faintest idea what I was doing. Remarkably (to me at least), I have been somewhat successful in my attempts to incorporate technology into the daily life of they Essay, my classrooms. In this article I share some of sting film, what I am doing, what I have learned, and where I think this is headed. I am a medievalist by trade. Teaching at a small school, however, I typically do more teaching of core curriculum courses — our English Department has a four-class sequence of composition and literature surveys — than I do of upper-level medieval literature courses. I talk often about basic writing skills, and Filipino, I grade stacks upon stacks of essays.

So I knew that my new digital teaching life would be built around the efficient processing of student papers. My first foray toward digital grading was to receive electronic copies of student work and sting film, then use the Review functions in Microsoft Word to correct and comment on them before returning the Romeo and Juliet Essay, marked-up electronic copies to sting, the students, often using Word's track changes feature. Closing Entries? This approach is film, certainly not unique, and I found positives to this system, including that students no longer had to decipher my handwriting. At the same time, the track changes method of paper grading had problems. For one thing, it was clunky. If I am going to postal act of 1879, grade electronically, I need the tool I'm using to get out of my way; I need the program, like the red pen, to disappear so that all I have to think about is film, my grading.

That was not happening with Word, in Why Did they Romeo and Juliet Essay which I spent a lot of time opening and closing files and functions. One of my biggest worries going into my grading-with-Word experiment was that it might inadvertently make coursework more difficult for film, my students who came from low-income and/or urban backgrounds and thus might not be as familiar with the technology. Happily, my experience agreed with recent studies showing that differences in digital literacy are not strongly tied to socioeconomics. 2 Unhappily, my experience showed little difference because a surprisingly large number of my students, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, were hardly adept at using this particular technology. All were familiar with the and Juliet Essay, basic uses of Word, but a much smaller number were comfortable with the extended functions of Review. While surprising to me, this discovery matches recent investigations into film, how tech-savvy college students really are. 3 I thus ended up spending class time showing students how to access my comments. Because the when entries, feedback was several steps away, I fear that some students most in need of it never got it.

Some of the same concerns applied to my use of sting, Blackboard. It did not take me long to begin searching for an alternative that would provide the 1879, advantages of an sting e-grading system without so many problems. Because I was doing this on my own, I knew that whatever I came up with needed to be inexpensive. As in free. Founded in 1998, Google is a collision point for information and Essay, technology. By 2010, its data centers were running over 34,000 searches per second, making it arguably the nexus of this extraordinary historical moment in which we find ourselves.

4 From my point of sting film, view, one of the great things about Google (and I'm not a stockholder) is that many of Why Did Die? Romeo and Juliet, its services are both free and powerful. GMail, for instance, is the best e-mail service I have ever used: searchable, flexible, and accessible from almost anywhere. In addition, it works digit-in-digit with Google Docs, an online suite of applications, and Google Calendar, now my sole time organizer. All of these services are available via any Internet connection. While I began my experiments somewhat wary of a cloud system, my experience has been that the downtime — periods when I could not access the Internet and do my work — is minimal. In fact, I've never been unable to access my materials. During my experimenting, meanwhile, our campus Blackboard servers were inaccessible several times for maintenance of one kind or another.

I first fell in love with GMail for film, its message threading, which allows a simple, sensible view of my electronic communications with students, and for the speed and thoroughness of its search functions. These features, however, are quickly becoming ubiquitous in e-mail programs. Postal Act Of 1879? What now sets GMail apart are the ways in which it has allowed me to treat e-mail not as a simple message exchange system but as an film integral part of my classroom experience, especially when it comes to martin van buren, the exchange of assignments. Students who recognize the sting, untapped pedagogical resource that e-mail represents welcome this approach. A 2008 survey of Essay about Greek, college students, for instance, found that 67 percent thought e-mail could positively impact student learning, compared with a mere 50 percent of sting, their associated faculty. 5 Unlike new-fangled software programs, our students know (and generally adore) e-mail.

Even better, they want to use it as part of Essay, their education. In making my digital grading system, I knew I wanted to make e-mail an integral part of the process, and GMail gave me the sting film, tools. I use the example of an Yema essay here, only because this is the sting, predominant item I tend to grade. Postal Act Of 1879? Any writing assignment can be exchanged and assessed in the same way. Before class begins on the due date for sting film, an assignment, students are expected to e-mail me their work as a .DOC, .DOCX, or .RTF file. When I walk into the classroom and pull out my smartphone, within seconds I can read down the list of e-mails in they Romeo my inbox to see who has (or has not) turned in the assignment. By glancing at the paperclip icon associated with each e-mail, I do not even need to open them to see whether the film, students properly attached a file (see Figure 1), and Die? and Juliet, the time stamps tell me the time each message was sent. Thus those Did you get it? queries from students are cut off before they can begin. Figure 1. Film? GMail Inbox on an Essay Due Date.

After class comes the grading, which I can do anywhere . The papers are all safely on Google's servers, accessible from just about anywhere I can access the Internet. What I give my students is not traditional line-editing grading, though long before I moved to my digital systems I was abandoning that time-honored method in favor of a more sparse grading style in which I pointed out representative errors but otherwise forced the act of, students to sting film, find the problems in their work themselves. I also use a five-part rubric of my own design to help provide students with pertinent information about the positives and negatives of their work. So I sit down and open the postal act of 1879, first e-mail from a student. Call him Bob. First, I click on the link to his attached paper (see Figure 2, Step 1). This will automatically use Google Docs (more on film this shortly) to open the document in foreign policy a new browser tab or window, enabling me to see quickly whether I do, in fact, have a paper to grade or if I have been sent Biology homework instead (Figure 2, Step 2).

Figure 2. Steps in Grading an film essay in GMail. Next, I click Reply to the e-mail. Martin Policy? If Bob sent me his Biology homework, I send a gentle (or not) e-mail pointing out the problem. Sting Film? If I have a paper to foreign policy, grade, however, I use GMail's Canned Responses system to insert, with one click of the mouse, a standard text into my reply e-mail (Figure 2, Step 3). This standard text contains my grading rubric (not yet filled out), an explanation of that rubric, hotlinks to some Internet sites that I tend to refer to quite a bit (like the film, Online Writing Lab at Purdue), and a space to van buren policy, begin entering my written feedback (Figure 2, Step 4). Switching back and forth between my browser tabs or windows, I now read through the sting film, paper, filling out my grading rubric and then writing what amounts to a letter explaining the issues. In a bonus for me and the student, I convey this information through a medium in they Romeo and Juliet Essay which they do not need to read my handwriting. I can also manage quite a few feedback tricks because both texts I am working on are digital. I can copy and paste parts of Bob's essay into my letter, for example, to highlight a positive (or negative) textual moment.

I can grab a paragraph of sting, his and set it directly alongside my heavy revision of it. I can paste in a book reference, even a link to the online catalog of the library. And if I suspect plagiarism, I can also rapidly copy a bit of Bob's text and closing are made:, search for it on sting film the Internet. GMail may be the heart of my grading system, but Google Docs is the lifeblood. Essay About Greek? I've already mentioned how it allows me to view the documents my students send me, but it is more than a simple viewer: it is actually a fairly well-featured suite of applications. I compose documents on it (as I have in drafting this short essay), and sting, I use it to build intricate, professional slideshow presentations that can be called up virtually anywhere at a moment's notice if I have Internet access (or anywhere at all if I click on a button and download them to a thumb drive or some other portable media). I also have an online spreadsheet that is as powerful as I could possibly ask for: since 2006 I have thereby stored all of my grades on Google Docs, which has enabled me, more than once, to check and confirm a grade for a student or administrator when I was hundreds or thousands of miles away from my office. When I'm grading any given paper, then, I have three browser tabs or windows running: My reply message to mean, the student (in GMail) The student's paper (in GoogleDocs) The grade book for the class (also in GoogleDocs) As soon as I have filled out my rubric and written my e-mail, I take Bob's grade and enter it into the grading spreadsheet (Figure 2, Step 5). Sting? This spreadsheet automatically calculates Bob's course grade, itself a handy thing for those catch-the-teacher-on-the-run questions.

I double-check the grade between e-mail and act of, spreadsheet. I double-check the sting, student's name between paper and postal 1879, spreadsheet. Then I close Bob's paper, send the sting film, e-mail, and pull up another paper. System Effectiveness and Future Directions. In my classroom, the postal act of 1879, cumulative effect of film, this interconnected suite of programs has been to get more useful feedback to the students, more quickly, and in about Greek Philosophers a form they find familiar. Papers are never lost, and — perhaps more importantly — the feedback is sting film, never lost. Periphery? As I am grading Bob's third essay, I can use the sting, threading and searchability of GMail to see, within seconds, exactly what he turned in for his first two papers and what I told him about them. He, of course, can do the same thing. And unlike the method of using track changes and commenting through Word, there's no need for Bob to download the essay to his hard drive, hope he has a compatible word processor, open the essay, turn on the function to view changes, and then scroll through the Why Did Die? Romeo and Juliet Essay, paper looking for the comments (itself a process that may require him to zoom out, change the viewing setting, or scroll to the side of the screen). Instead, Bob can open his e-mail and sting film, do a simple search for my name; within seconds he has access to all of my comments on when closing entries all of his papers.

I have the same, of course, and on an expanded scale I am now building a database of student work — a goldmine of material for sting film, any self-assessment I might conduct on what does my methods and courses, or any plans I might make to chart student growth. All of it free, all of sting, it without IT support, and all of it easy to learn and use. Best of all, the students seem to love it. In the spring of 2011 I asked the 48 students who took courses from me in the fall of 2010 to fill out an anonymous survey that allowed them to Why Did they Die? Romeo and Juliet Essay, compare my e-grading methods to other methods they had encountered. The results, while hardly scientific, were to my eye very positive, as shown in Table 1. Table 1. Student Perceptions of E-Grading Compared to sting film, Other Grading Methods.

While I'd love to rest on those laurels — believe me, I would — the digital grading system described here is only a toe dipped into Why Did they Die? Romeo, the pool of pedagogical possibilities offered by these kinds of technologies. As digital literacy grows, so too will our ability — and need — to integrate more digital tools into our teaching. If students also have Google accounts, then we can leverage the sharing function of Google Docs, in film which the same file can be accessed by Why Did they Die? more than one user. Sting? The PowerPoint lectures I have developed in the system, for instance, could be shared with my students at the click of a button, giving them ready access to printing the policy, lectures out for review and study. Going even further with this sharing feature, an instructor could create a template for a given writing assignment in Google Docs and then share a copy of the document with each of his or her students. From that point forward, the instructor and sting, student would both be able to directly access the same document file (though the instructor, as the owner of the file, could lock out the student from van buren foreign working on it at any point, a potentially important feature). Film? Changes made by one party to the document, or comments, would be instantly viewable to the other party. This document sharing could thus be used in the final assessment process, perhaps replacing the about Greek Philosophers, e-mail exchange described above. These same capabilities are amplified if students compose their work in a shared Google Doc. Because of the way the application tracks document changes, the instructor could see the entire process of document creation, from the initial tentative steps of brainstorming through the various stages of drafting and sting, revision. Yema Filipino? Taken a step further, the sting film, instructor could selectively add more students to a shared document, bringing peer-review or collaborative work into a controlled and analyzable fold.

Simply put, this sharing capability within Google Docs is an enormously powerful pedagogical tool. We just need to harness it. I am not going to say that our future is here — that would be nonsense. But I do think it is true that the future is coming faster than ever, and we need to start worrying about it today. Though we cannot take this digital world in does periphery all at once, we can — like that old adage about how to eat an elephant — take it one small bite (or byte) at sting, a time. And if a medievalist can start chewing on it, I suspect you can, too.
